Flyers' Ron Hextall named Team Canada general manager

Flyers general manager Ron Hextall on Monday was named the GM of Team Canada for the upcoming IIHF World Championships in France and Germany.

Hextall will be joined by Montreal Canadiens executives Sean Burke (a former Flyer) and Larry Carrière, along with vice-president of hockey operations Scott Salmond.

"With the NHL regular season winding down, some very quick and smart decisions need to be made in regards to coaching staff and player selections," said Hockey Canada president and chief executive officer Tom Renney in a statement, adding the four men bring "knowledge and experience that will be invaluable."

Team Canada, aiming for its third straight title, plays its opening game May 5 against the Czech Republic. The bronze- and gold-medal games will be played May 21.

It will be interesting to see which Flyers (Claude Giroux? Wayne Simmonds?) are selected for Team Canada.
