By dealing Max Talbot to Colorado for Steve Downie on Thursday, the Flyers' lost one of their best penalty killers.
To fill that role, Adam Hall will be inserted into the lineup Friday against visiting Washington.
"He's a good penalty killer and can play different positions," coach Craig Berube said after Friday's morning skate at the Wells Fargo Center. "He's a good versatile guy."
Hall has been a healthy scratch the last two games.
Downie, 26, was on the ice for the morning skate. Berube wouldn't say where he will play, but Downie was on a line with Vinny Lecavalier during part of his time in Tampa Bay. Since they have some chemistry, it's likely Downie will be with Lecavalier and Claude Giroux on Friday.
"I played with Vinny for 4 1/2 years in Tampa," Downie said. "I know the way he plays, he knows the way I play, so it'll be fun" if they are reunited.
Lecavalier called Downie a "great team guy" and a "smart player who makes plays. He can do everything. He can score. He can pass."
The "smart player" will need to avoid senseless penalties if he is going to make an impact. He is tied for sixth in the NHL with eight minor penalties.
Downie, who says he is a more mature player than he was in his first stint with the Flyers, said he got "chills" walking into the WFC because this is where his career started.
"I'm excited to be (back) here. I always wanted to be a Flyer," Downie said."....Putting on the jersey again was something special this morning. It's a special place. There aren't very many hockey markets like this."
The Flyers hope Downie can spark a struggling offense.
"He's a fiery guy with skill. He has real good hands and has a real good head for the game," said Berube, who coached Downie with the AHL Phantoms. "He finds people and is a good passer. He plays with some fire in his belly."
The Flyers (3-8) have scored two or fewer goals in in 10 of their 11 games.
Defenseman Erik Gustafsson will go back into the lineup tonight and replace Andrej Meszaros, while Hall will replace Jay Rosehill.
Washington (5-7) is without injured superstar Alex Ovechkin.
Breakaways. Steve Mason (3-6, 2.25 GAA, .928 save percentage) will make his 10th start in 12 games.
