Flyers' Brayden Schenn has found a home at right wing; Brandon Manning impressive

Brayden Schenn has fit in nicely at his new position, right wing.

And not just because he scored a hard-to-believe goal in the closing seconds of the Flyers' 5-4 victory over the New York Islanders on Tuesday night at the Wells Fargo Center.

Ever since right winger Wayne Simmonds suffered a season-ending fracture near the bottom of his left leg, Schenn, a natural center, has played right wing on a line with Sean Couturier and Matt Read.

Tuesday marked the fourth straight game Schenn was on that line. In the last four games, he has seven  points, including four goals, and was named the NHL's second star of the week.

"First time I've ever played on right wing and I actually like it better," Schenn said before scoring one of the most improbable goals of the season, a 45-foot shot that handcuffed goalie Jaroslav Halak with 2.1 seconds left. "Just off the rush, you're able to make more plays, see more of the ice, get off the boards a little bit more.''

Schenn's game-winner was fired a couple of strides above the left circle.

He said said he never saw the puck elude Halak.

"I heard it might have hit his stick, and I don't know if it went through his arm or not," he said. "I didn't really see it go in, but...I heard the crowd."

Schenn called it an “honor” to be named an NHL  star of the week for the first time in his career.

"The credit goes to my linemates and teammates," he said.

Schenn has 18 goals, a career-high 46 points, and a minus-5 rating. He took nine shots (five on goal) in Tuesday's bizarre victory.

"I'm just trying to finish the season strong," he said. "I've had a little success (with Read and Couturier) and hope to keep it going this week.''

Schenn, 23, had been playing center or left wing before coach Craig Berube shifted him to the right side.

"It opens up the ice a bit for him," Berube said. "He's got a good shot and he can pull it in off that side and shoot it. His stick is on the inside and it's a better angle shooting. When Wayne went down, it opened up an opportunity for him. He's been producing.''

Manning makes impression. Defenseman Brandon Manning has three points and a plus-3 rating in nine games this season, one in which he has been recalled four times from the Phantoms.

In 19 career NHL games, he is plus-8.

GM Ron Hextall is trying to re-sign the potential unrestricted free agent.

"I have to put my career first, but I would love to stay in Philly for sure," Manning said.

Manning acknowledged that these late-season games are "big for me with my free-agent status.''

Added Manning: "I've kind of been a free agent my whole career. Wasn't drafted. . .that's been the story of my life. I know there are eight NHL guys ahead of me. This summer is a big summer for me. I can do whatever I want.''

It sounds as if he will test the market.

Breakaways. In their last two games, the Flyers have wins despte being outshot by a combined, 87-47...Mark Streit had three assists for the third time in his career.
