2 Flyers left in Olympics; practice resumes in Voorhees

And then there were two.

Winger Jake Voracek (Czech Republic) and defenseman Kimmo Timonen (Finland) are the only Flyers remaining in Olympic competition after the results of Tuesday's pre-quarterfinals.

Voracek has an assist as the Czechs eliminated Slovakia, 5-3. Flyers defenseman Andrej Mesazaros had three shots and played 20:40 for Slovakia.

The Czech Republic will meet USA in Wednesday's quarterfinals at noon. The winner will face the Canada-Latvia survivor in the semifinals.

Timonen's Finland team had a bye Tuesday and will face Russia in Wednesday's 7:30 a.m. quarterfinals. The winner of that game will play the Sweden-Slovenia survivor in the semis.

Slovenia defeated Austria (Michael Raffl), 4-0, on Tuesday, while Latvia ousted Switzerland (Mark Streit), 3-1. Streit logged a team-high 24:56.

Flyers return. The non-Olympian Flyers will return to practice Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Voorhees. The Flyers are hoping the Olympic break doesn't curtail the momentum they built by winning their last four games.

Practice is free and open to the public.

5 Phantoms suspended.  Five Adirondack Phantoms were suspended by the AHL Tuesday because of their involvement in a wild brawl during their 2-0 loss Sunday to host Portland.

Center Kris Newburry, who has 13 goals, received the stiffest suspension _ four games. Goalie Cal Heeter (three games) and forwards Zack FitzGerald (two), Ben Holmstrom (two) and Tye McGinn (one) were also suspended.

Kyle Hagel (two games) was the only Portland player suspended.

The teams were assessed 329 penalty minutes, including 195 for the Phantoms.

The Phantoms host Albany on Friday, then face Bridgeport on Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center.
