Flyers recall Drewiske; McDavid has broken clavicle

The Flyers recalled 6-foot-2, 220-pound defenseman Davis Drewiske from the AHL's Phantoms on Wednesday, and there is no word if he will play Thursday in Calgary.

CALGARY, Alberta - The Flyers recalled 6-foot-2, 220-pound defenseman Davis Drewiske from the AHL's Phantoms on Wednesday, and there was no word if he would play Thursday in Calgary.

The Flyers sent winger Chris Conner back to the Phantoms. Conner was recalled Monday but did not play in any games.

Drewiske, 30, who has played parts of five NHL seasons with Los Angeles and Montreal, gives the Flyers insurance in the last two games of the road trip.

Defenseman Evgeny Medvedev was examined in Philadelphia on Wednesday for an undisclosed injury. The Flyers did not have a medical update.

Drewiske was signed as a free agent on July 1. In 135 NHL games, he has five goals, 25 points, and a minus-1 rating. In nine games with the Phantoms this year, he had one assist and an even rating.

There is a chance that struggling defenseman Brandon Manning will be replaced by Drewiske, who was recalled partly because he has only a $575,000 salary-cap hit. With him, the Flyers barely fit under the cap, with $95,000 to spare.

Facing Johnny Hockey

The Flyers (4-6-2) will face Calgary (3-9-1) and South Jersey's Johnny Gaudreau on Thursday. Gaudreau, a rookie-of-the-year finalist last season, leads the Flames with 13 points.

Writers honoring Voracek

Jake Voracek, who finished fourth in the NHL with 81 points last season, was named Philadelphia's most outstanding athlete and will be among the athletes honored at the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association's 112th annual dinner Feb. 1 at the Crowne Plaza in Cherry Hill.

"To be picked out of the four main sports in Philadelphia, it's a great honor," Voracek said. "There's so many good athletes in the city. When I came over four years ago, I would never have thought I would accomplish something like this. I couldn't do it without my teammates."

Breakaways

Opponents have scored the first goal in the first three games of the Flyers' current five-game road trip. . . . Rookie coach Dave Hakstol second-guessed himself for not calling a timeout with 14 minutes left Tuesday. The Flyers, playing their second game in two nights and looking tired, held a 2-1 lead at the time. "That's not on the guys; that's on me. That's where it starts," Hakstol said.
