Takeaways from Eagles' dress rehearsal: They looked ready

INDIANAPOLIS – Random observations from the Eagles' 33-23 preseason victory Saturday night over the Colts at Lucas Oil Field:

*Sam Bradford was deadly in his final regular season tuneup. An undeserved interception blotted his record – Nelson Agholor handed the ball to Darius Butler, setting up a field goal for the Colts. But Bradford otherwise hit on 12 of 13 for 135 yards in the first half, and the first Eagles touchdown for Dorial Green-Beckham.  Bradford then led a third-quarter TD drive, and eventually sat down on 17-for-20 for 167 yards and 2 TDs, a 114 passer rating.

*Green-Beckham was working against the immortal Tay Glover-Wright, with Indianapolis missing several corners, but that was a lovely 4-yard TD to the left side of the end zone, the 6-foot corner looking like a kid trying to stop an adult. A large adult.

*Ryan Mathews ended his evening with 31 yards on three carries. That was enough. Kenjon Barner got some time with the starters, finished his day with 39 yards on six carries, including a whopping 25-yard run on which he got an excellent block from Zach Ertz. Barner also had a 35-yard kickoff return and two punt returns totaling 33 yards.

*Run defense was deadly, which isn't supposed to happen when you play a Wide 9. The Colts went into halftime with nine carries for 13 yards. They finished the night with 39 yards on 18 carries.

*While we're on the subject of defense, the pressure on Andrew Luck was constant. One time Fletcher Cox lined up as a Wide 9 DE, blew past the right tackle and hit Luck as he threw. Sacks from Connor Barwin, Bennie Logan, and Beau Allen. Yes, Beau Allen.

*The D held on third-and-fourth-and-1 from its 29 in the first half.

*Josh Huff came up with the first half he needed to have to cement a spot. Two catches for 60 yards and a nine-yard end-around touchdown run. So much talent there. Such a tease, so far.

*Fifth-round rookie running back Wendell Smallwood's first preseason touch was a 30-yard kickoff return.

*Rueben Randle barely saw the field in the first half, finished with a pair of catches for 13 yards. Doesn't look good for the Giants' 2012 second-round pick, who was a free agent for a reason, it seems.

*David Watford, the former Hampton QB who is trying to learn to be a wideout, caught a 28-yard Chase Daniel touchdown pass. Interesting project. Smart guy who is always on his tablet in the locker room, looking at plays.

*The Colts' only sack of Sam Bradford came on the Eagles' first snap, an unaccounted-for blitzer. Pretty clean pocket after that.

*Cody Parkey missed an extra point. Unless Donnie Jones strikes again, looks more and more like Caleb Sturgis is the kicker. Sturgis hit 32- and 47-yard field goals. The 47 would have been good from 55, easily.

*Trey Burton got a lot of work as the Eagles showed some of the three-tight-end stuff we've been anticipating. Caught five passes for 35 yards. Zach Ertz caught five for 25. Ten completions to TEs, Brent Celek unable to come up with the only ball he was thrown.

*Vinny Curry suffered a knee sprain right before halftime that Curry said wasn't serious. "Couple days" he said. But of course, Curry won't play in Thursday's preseason finale against the Jets.

*Darren Sproles goes back into the freezer until the season starts with no preseason rushing attempts, four catches for 16 yards.

*Lotta snaps with the first and second teams for C.J. Smith, the undrafted rookie corner from North Dakota State. As @fakeWIPcaller might say, "at least the Eagles are getting SOMETHING from somebody from North Dakota State."
