Report: Eagles-Redskins game could be moved to Detroit

The NFL is considering moving the Eagles-Redskins game on Sunday to Detroit.

The NFL is monitoring Hurricane Joaquin's projected path and investigating scheduling contingencies in case the Eagles-Redskins game on Sunday needs to be moved from FedEx Field in Landover, Md. The league said Thursday in a statement that "there is no change in the schedule for the game at this point."

It's scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

One option being discussed is moving the game to Detroit, according to the NFL Network.

Detroit has been used in the past when games could not be played in a team's home venue. Ford Field hosted a Buffalo Bills game during a snowstorm last season and a Minnesota Vikings game in 2010 when the Metrodome's roof collapsed.

Coach Chip Kelly said he did not know where or when the game will be played. He was still preparing for the scheduled game time.

"We're preparing to play on Sunday, but there's been nothing definitive in terms of what's going to go on," Kelly said. "So when they tell us what we're doing, if the plan were to change, we'll adjust accordingly. But there has been nothing told to us, so we're preparing and going out today. Today's a normal Thursday for us, just like we're playing Sunday at 1."

Washington is taking the same approach. A Redskins spokesman told the Washington Post that they are "preparing to play the Philadelphia Eagles this weekend at FedEx Field."

Kelly has never experienced this kind of uncertainty before a game, but he understands it.

"If it does hit in some of the manners that it could hit, then it could really affect everybody," Kelly said. "Washington, nor us, can control [the weather]. So, whatever they tell us - when to play, where to play and if things will change - we'll adjust accordingly."

Kelly said the players would adjust cleats before the game based on the playing surface. The coaching staff is checking the weather to put together a game plan. But the Eagles need to make the adjustments during the game because much depends which direction they are going.

"We don't have it down to where if we know it's a northeast wind and we're at their field; their field is plotted in a certain manner," Kelly said. "That stuff will all be determined on game day."

Kelly on 'Redskins'

When Kelly was asked whether he thinks "Redskins" is an appropriate name for an NFL team, the coach paused.

"I have a lot of personal beliefs on things, but my belief doesn't affect what that name is," Kelly said. "So they can do what they want to do."

The Eagles' media materials did not use "Redskins" this week. They simply say "Washington" when identifying the opponent. The materials usually include the other team's name.

Extra points

Linebacker Kiko Alonso (knee) was the only player who did not practice. Tackle Jason Peters (quadriceps), defensive end Cedric Thornton (hand), defensive end Taylor Hart (shoulder), and safety Chris Maragos (quadriceps) were limited.
