The Eagles head to the Linc today for the first padded practice, and the team expects a large turnout from the fans. Here is what you may have missed from yesterday's coverage of the team.
Michael Vick said he saw Jeremy Maclin go down out of the corner of his eye, Maclin crumpling only a step or two off the line of scrimmage during a 7-on-7 drill Saturday in the second day of full-squad activity at NovaCare.
"Usually when a guy falls like that, it's something to be worried about," Vick said as Maclin's right knee was undergoing tests. The obvious fear is an ACL tear, which would end Maclin's season before it began. This would be particularly unfortunate, given that Maclin is in the final season of his rookie contract, and is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent next spring.
Chip Kelly told reporters Friday that if he calls 20 read-option plays with Nick Foles at quarterback, he should be fired.
That doesn’t mean he won’t run it all with No. 9 under center.
“Even if I am [the quarterback] I feel like we’ll still run it,” said Foles following Saturday’s practice. “I’m capable of getting five to ten yards and extending the play, maybe more if the Red Sea parts. I feel comfortable going. That’s part of the offense, that’s part of what we’re going to do, so I feel comfortable doing it and I’m willing to do it. I’m excited to go out there and do it and show my athletic ability.
Jimmy note: Tim has more good notes worth checking out. It's not just Foles.
Good stuff as usual from Brandon.
On the QB battle... I tweeted that Nick Foles looked better than Mike Vick today. By the slightest of margins, of course. Barkley accidentally threw a pass into the human fly-swatters at one point. A common rookie mistake.
Tommy looks at Jeremy Maclin's ptoential replacements:
"Riley Cooper – Outstanding blocker. Inconsistent pass catcher over the last couple of years, but I’ve always thought that was affected by how he was used. Cooper would have 3 passes come his way in a game and then go a couple of games with no looks. Receivers need to be used consistently so that they develop. Cooper can make highlight catches. He has solid speed. Limited RAC ability, but runs hard and won’t go down on initial contact."
Ball broke Jerry Rice's divison I-AA record with 58 career touchdown catches.
Jimmy note: The Ball signing and Maclin's injury are unrelated.
"We're going from a wide-nine to a 3-4," Kelly said after the Eagles' first full-squad training-camp workout. "When do we get to a 3-4? I don't know. We may have to stop at being a one-gap [4-3] over/under defense depending on [if they are] still making an evaluation of what our guys can do.
"We haven't been drafting for this. We're converting some of the defensive ends [Cole, Graham and Phillip Hunt] to see what they can do. Our job is to see what they do best and play to those strengths. Where we land on that realm, I can't exactly tell you until we get a chance to see those guys."
Jimmy note: I'm a little late on this one from Domo, but it's a good read, especially with all the other focus on Maclin's injury.
By CSNPhilly.com’s unofficial count, Foles completed 22 of 24 passes. He took 40 total reps, 24 with the first team and 16 with the second team. During seven-on-seven drills, Foles unleashed a long pass down the right sideline that was hauled in by DeSean Jackson for a big gain. As the Eagles set up for the next play, some fans in the stands chanted Foles' name.
Jimmy note: I thought Foles looked sharp, but I had no idea he completed that many passes. While I don't want to make too much of completion percentages in non-contact practices that don't include a pass rush, 22 of 24 is still impressive.
