Pederson: 'No legitimacy' to WR trade reports

Coach Doug Pederson said Wednesday that "there is no legitimacy'' to reports that the Eagles are trying to trade for 49ers wide receiver Torrey Smith or Bears wideout Alshon Jeffery.

"I'm thrilled with the guys we have, and going to work with them every day,'' Pederson said.

The NFL trade deadline is next Tuesday.

Asked if that meant the Eagles are not trying to upgrade the wide receiver position, Pederson said, "Well, look, you say 'upgrade.' I think every team is trying to upgrade every position if you could. But not at this time, no.''

Wide receiver Jordan Matthews is the team's leading receiver with 25 catches for 354 yards and 2 touchdowns. But Matthews primarily plays in the slot. The team's three outside receivers – Nelson Agholor, Josh Huff and newcomer Dorial Green-Beckham – have combined for 43 catches and 2 touchdowns and are averaging just 9.1 yards per catch.

Agholor, who was mentioned along with Huff as two wide receivers on the roster who can stretch the field, is averaging just 10.6 yards per catch. He hasn't had more than 57 receiving yards in a game this season.

Huff has just 12 catches and is averaging 5.3 yards per catch, which is actually up from the 3.0 he was averaging last week before catching four passes for 39 yards in the Eagles' 21-10 win over the Vikings.

"When I think of stretching the field, a guy can run fast, but who can really take the top off (a defense), those guys are two that can do that,'' Pederson said. "And Bryce Treggs."

Treggs has been inactive for all of the Eagles' first six games.

"Josh was pretty efficient last week,'' Pederson said. "He caught some nice balls, a couple in the red zone and a couple of bubble-slant combinations that we do with him. That's kind of who Josh is. And the kickoff returning. These are things Josh can do."

Huff had a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against the Vikings.

"He's another one, much like DGB (Dorial Green-Beckham), that you try to find more opportunities for every week,'' Pederson said of Huff. "When you have 22-23 pass attempts and another 26 or so running attempts (in a game), there's just not that many plays.

"We have (plays for them) in every week. It's my job, I guess, to call them in situations where we can utilize them. But sometimes it's just the circumstances of a game.''

Notes: Pederson said the only two players who wouldn't practice Wednesday were defensive tackle Bennie Logan (groin) and linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill (hamstring). ... Pederson said the reason the Eagles replaced injured cornerback Ron Brooks on the 53-man roster with defensive tackle Taylor Hart was that the injury to Logan had left them with just three tackles. "As much rotating as we do with that group, we felt the need to bring a fourth in,'' he said.
