Pederson: Happy to see Sproles extended, looking to get Mathews, Brooks back next week

Eagles coach Doug Pederson said running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) and right guard Brandon Brooks (hamstring) are day-to-day. Both missed Friday's indoor workout, part of the buildup to Saturday's first practice with pads at training camp.

"We're anticipating next week sometime getting 'em both back on the field," Pederson said.

Coincidental to the Mathews injury or not, the Eagles announced a one-year contract extension for 33-year-old running back and returner Darren Sproles, who had been scheduled to become a free agent after this season. The NFL Network said Sproles' extension is worth $4.5 million, with some of the money added into this year's scheduled $3.6 million salary.

"Anytime, in my opinion, that you can have a playmaker like Darren Sproles and you can keep him locked up for a couple of years, it makes you feel good," Pederson said; since 2007, Sproles is the NFL's leader in all-purpose yardage. "I'm just so happy for him and his family, the work that Howie (Roseman) put in to make sure this thing got done. I'm just so excited to have him here, and look forward to working with him."

Sproles said he figures this is his last contract. "When I'm done playing, I'm going to be an Eagle," he said, despite having played for San Diego and New Orleans.

"I'm 33 years old. For them to give me an extra year, it actually says a lot," he said.

It is unusual for a running back to get a new deal at 33, but Sproles has had an unusual career.

"Darren Sproles is a pro's pro," Pederson said. "He knows how to take care of his body in the offseason. He's a very intelligent running back. He's been around this game a long time. It's guys like that that you don't worry about. He does everything right. He does what you coach him to do. … The way he prepares and the way he attacks every day gives you the confidence that he's going to be around a few more years."

Pederson was asked about running back depth, which seems destined to be a recurring topic, given Sproles' age and Mathews' extensive injury history. Mathews has played all 16 games in a season only once in his six-year NFL career.

"We've got a lot of talent right there. We've got some young talent. Kenjon Barner is a kid that has shown some good strides this offseason in picking up the offense," Pederson said. "You get Ryan out there. You got Darren. And then you've got the young kids – Wendell (Smallwood, drafted in the fifth round), who we picked up, Byron Marshall, Cedric O'Neal (both undrafted free agents) – we've got some guys who have some talent. I love playing with two tight ends; I love playing with a couple of halfbacks in the game. I think it's a chance to get all these guys some reps now (with Mathews out)."
