Eagles kicker Caleb Sturgis signs one-year contract extension

Caleb Sturgis won the Eagles' kicking competition this summer, and he was rewarded with a contract extension this weekend.

Sturgis, 27, added one additional year to his contract with the Eagles, the team confirmed. ESPN reported the news earlier this morning. Sturgis is on the books for $900,000 in 2017.

The move gives the Eagles the chance for stability at kicker if Sturgis continues to perform. The former Florida standout was signed last fall as a replacement for Cody Parkey, who had a groin injury in his second year with the team. Sturgis had a rocky debut, including a missed field goal and extra point on Oct. 4 against Washington. But he rebounded to finish the season 18 of 22 on field goals and 35 of 37 on extra points, and he outperformed Parkey over the summer.

The Eagles have eight players who will be unrestricted free agents at the end of the year: Stefen Wisniewski, Bryan Braman, Bennie Logan, Stephen Tulloch, Nolan Carroll, Chris Maragos, Jon Dorenbos, and Donnie Jones. Kenjon Barner and Trey Burton will be restricted free agents. Jaylen Watkins is an exclusive rights free agent.
