Eagles WR Jordan Matthews returns to practice

Wide receiver Jordan Matthews, who missed most of training camp and the first three preseason games with a bone bruise to his knee, returned to the practice field Monday.

Coach Doug Pederson said Matthews would participate in group install and would get "a rep or two'' in 7-on-7 work.

"He's on track and doing a great job with his recovery and should be ready to go next week,'' for the season-opener against Cleveland, Pederson said.

Guard Isaac Seumalo, who sat out Saturday's game against the Colts with a pec strain, didn't practice Monday and is listed day to day.

"We want to make sure he's 100 percent before we put him back out there,'' Pederson said.

Running back Wendell Smallwood suffered a concussion against the Colts and is going through concussion protocol. It's unlikely he'll be cleared in time to play in the final preseason game Thursday against the Jets.

Defensive linemen Vinny Curry and Taylor Hart, who suffered knee injuries Saturday, didn't practice Monday, but Pederson said he fully expects both to be ready for Week 1.

Quarterback Carson Wentz had a CT scan on his two injured ribs. Pederson said one of the ribs is completely healed, but the other one is at just 60 percent.

Pederson said that Wentz won't play against the Jets Thursday night if the second rib doesn't heal significantly more.

"He'll continue to work,'' Pederson said. "He got two good workouts in last week, one at the stadium. He's still sore from that. But he'll continue to get his rehab and continue to work.''

Stefen Wisniewski replaced Seumalo at left guard Saturday and played well. Last week, Pederson suggested that Seumalo, a third-round rookie, would be the likely season-opening starter there. On Monday, though, it didn't seem nearly as cut and dried.

"Wiz played great,'' Pederson said. "He got all of the reps during the week. I thought the whole offensive line played extremely well. He's a veteran guy who's played a lot of games in this league. He fit in really well.

"Isaac's situation, right now, he's day to day. But I would expect him to be back next week. Then we'll make a determination going forward on who will be the starting five against Cleveland.''

There's still been no official word from the league on Lane Johnson's status. Johnson has acknowledged that he tested positive for PEDS and has appealed. If he loses his appeal, which he expects to, he's facing a 10-game suspension.

The Eagles have moved left guard Allen Barbre to right tackle to replace Johnson, which has opened up a starting spot at left guard.
