With Jason Peters' contract extension complete, the Eagles are expected to focus their attention on locking Jason Kelce up with a long-term deal sometime in the very near future. The announcement could come as early as Thursday morning with a press conference in the afternoon, according to sources close to Kelce.
General manager Howie Roseman wouldn't confirm that the Eagles were in negotiations with the fourth-year center, but him and coach Chip Kelly have made it no secret that they hope to have Kelce around for some time.
"Without getting into any specifics," Roseman said Wednesday, Kelce is "a guy we drafted, a guy we think very highly of, and we talked about it in the offseason, a guy that really kind of fits the culture and the chemistry."
Kelce, like Peters before his new contract, is entering the final year of his deal. He has spoken freely about wanting to stay in Philadelphia beyond 2014. And Roseman said that the Eagles wanted to keep an offensive line that didn't miss a start last season intact.
Peters inked a four-year extension on Wednesday and is signed through 2018. Most of the guaranteed money is in the first two years, but he and guards Evan Mathis and Todd Herremans and tackle Lane Johnson – the latter three signed through 2016 – are under contract for the foreseeable future.
And indications are the Kelce will join them soon. Like Peters, he successfully returned from a major leg injury (torn ACL) in 2013. Unlike Peters, he didn't make the Pro Bowl, although the argument could be made that he deserved to go.
