Eagles training camp 2013: What they're saying: Some love for the special teams units

The Eagles' 4th and final preseason game is tonight, which is basically just a "last chance" kind of deal for the final 2 or 3 roster spots. Nick Foles will get the start at QB. Here's what they're saying...

Detailed game review: PHI 31, JAX 24 - Tommy Lawlor, IgglesBlitz

This thing is almost 8000 words. Tommy is insane. A sampling:

JOHNSON - Found out what it’s like to go against a good speed rusher. Johnson had never dealt with anyone like Jason Babin and that was a problem in the 1st Qtr. Babin got the best of him with speed off the edge and then spin moves back to the inside. The good news is that Johnson adjusted and got better. Babin used a spin move on the 2nd play and flushed Vick out of the pocket. Johnson had an excellent block on long inside run by Shady. Lane sealed the LB and gave Shady a huge void to hit. Great block on Vick’s TD pass. Handled Babin’s speed and wouldn’t let him back to the inside either. Lane settled down in pass pro in the 2nd Qtr and looked much better. He used his arms to lock onto Babin. Lane kept his feet active so he could mirror Babin. The talent is there. Just learning how to play.

Dave Fipp injecting life into Eagles special teams - Geoff Mosher, CSN Philly

Ask different players, you’ll get different answers. Why do the Eagles look so impressive on special teams this preseason? Some credit the scheme. Some say it’s the heavy emphasis at practice. Some say it’s players making the maturity jump from Year 1 to Year 2.

All of them, though, credit new coordinator Dave Fipp for making special teams not seem like such a drag.

Jones: Fipp's field position flipper - Dan Klausner, Eagles Mothership

The field position game is critical in the NFL and there is perhaps no weapon more underrated or underappreciated than the punter. That is no longer the case in Philadelphia with head coach Chip Kelly running the show. The 2013 Eagles punt teams expect to be vastly improved from 2012, when they ranked 27th in net punting average (38.8), 31st in punt return defense (13.6 yards per return) and dead last in punts downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line (15).

Report: RG3 will start Week 1 vs Eagles - BGN

The Eagles will have to earn it in Landover on September 9th.

RG3 vs. Eagles: How do QBs fare in first game back from torn ACL? - Jordan Raanan, NJ.com

That Griffin will take the field without a single snap in the preseason is unique. None of the other star quarterbacks before him to suffer ACL tears over the past decade or so have taken the field in the regular season without at least a few exhibition snaps.

Their results have been a mixed bag. Take a look.

Understanding Chip Kelly's approach to the defense - Tim McManus, Philly Mag

Damion Square is accustomed to feeling the heat on the back of his neck.

He comes from Alabama, a program run by some guy namedNick Saban, whose roots are deeply planted on the defensive side of the ball. That is his domain. With Chip Kelly, it’s the complete opposite.

“The intensity is different because you’ve got the head guy on your field at all times,” said the rookie. “It doesn’t mean I practice in any different way but it’s a whole other pressure when you have your head coach standing over your shoulder every play. Coach Kelly, he makes a trip over there every once in a while to see if guys are buying in.”
