Eagles rookie notes: Beau Allen signs, a closer look at the UDFAs, Joe Kruger, and tryouts

The Eagles' first rookie camp will begin today and carry on through the weekend at the NovaCare Complex. The media will have a chance to speak with the new guys later today, but for now, some notes on the lesser-known rookies:

Beau Allen signs with the Eagles

Allen was the Eagles' 7th round pick this year. That makes two signed draft picks after Josh Huff signed earlier in the week. Five to go. Allen is a 6'2, 333 pound DT from Wisconsin who could provide the Eagles with depth at NT and in short yardage situations. The Saints converted five 3rd and 3's or shorter with their run game against the Eagles in the playoffs last season, and two on their final drive.

Another look at the Eagles' undrafted free agents

I've finally had a chance to take a peek at some of the Eagles' undrafted free agent pickups, and while we noted a few that initially stood out earlier in the week, I'd like to add one more to the list. That would be 6'4, 247 pound TE Blake Annen of Cincinnati. The Bearcats moved Annen around in their offense. Here's his game against Purdue, where you can see his ability as a blocker for a guy his size.

Annen had almost no production as a receiver. For his entire career at Cincinnati, Annen caught 19 passes for 218 yards and 2 TDs. However, he ran a 4.41 at his pro day. That speed doesn't really show up in the video above, but any TE who can run a 4.41 is intriguing. It's probably a little early to start predicting training camp battles, but with the Eagles loaded at TE, Annen would be an interesting player to try to stash on the practice squad where the Eagles can develop him.

Here is where CBS Sports had each of the Eagles' undrafted free agents rated:

What about Joe Kruger?

In the 2013 draft, the Eagles selected DE Joe Kruger out of Utah. It's easily understandable why they liked him. Kruger has great size, measuring in at the 2013 Combine at 6'6, 269. The Eagles now list him at 6'6, 290. In the final preseason game against the Jets, Kruger injured his shoulder, allowing the Eagles to put him on IR for the season and almost treat him as if he'd be a 2014 draft pick.

On the one hand, if Kruger had not been injured, he was more than likely not going to make the 53-man roster, as he did not stand out much at all in training camp.

On the other hand, Kruger was occasionally dominant in college at Utah, and it will be interesting to see how he carries the extra weight he seems to have added. Here's one of Kruger's better games against BYU:

Still, Kruger has a ways to go from where he was this time last year.

Some additional guys will be getting tryouts with the Eagles

They are: LB Blaze Caponegro, TE Jamie Childers, LB Ryan Donohue, OLB Anthony Larry, C Macky MacPherson, DB Davon Morgan, and DL Baker Steinkuhler.

Sheil Kapadia has more on those guys at Birds 24/7. The only thing I'll add is that Macky MacPherson's name is awesome.
