Eagles release first (semi-meaningless) depth chart: 10 observations

The Eagles released their first depth chart today, which isn't completely meaningless, but at the same time shouldn't be taken all that seriously. Because we obsess about all things Eagles, let's over-analyze! Ten observations:

1) The Eagles list three wide receiver spots on their chart. Last year they listed two tight ends and two wide receivers. Brad Smith is listed as a starter, and Jordan Matthews is listed with the second team. Before you start screaming "But I thought Jordan Matthews was a future Hall of Famer?!?!?" just note that Matthews is a rookie, and rookies get listed lower on the depth chart than they should.

2) That same sentiment applies to Taylor Hart, who is listed below Brandon Bair. Hart can play, and will not only make the team, but will contribute as a rookie. Bair will likely do neither.

3) And once again, the same applies for Josh Huff, who is a lock to make the team, but if you went strictly by the depth chart, he'd be out. Listed ahead of him with the two's are Jeff Maehl and Arrelious Benn. I would agree that Maehl and Benn are fighting it out for that sixth WR spot.

4) The first team defense isn't a surprise at all. Nate Allen is the projected starter over Earl Wolff at safety opposite Malcolm Jenkins. Allen is also likely to start Week 1, in my opinion.

5) Yesterday I noted that Nolan Carroll looked good as a returner. I figured he might contribute as a returner at some point this season, but I wasn't expecting to see him listed first there.

6) QB order is Foles-Sanchez-Barkley-Kinne, as expected.

7) The second team OL is exactly what we've been seeing in practice every day.

8) I can understand why the Eagles listed Nick Foles and Michael Vick in the same spot this time last year, but I'm not sure why they did that with Emmanuel Acho / Casey Matthews and Jaylen Watkins / Curtis Marsh. The Eagles won't reveal the leader in those heated camp battles for second and third string supremacy!

9) Nobody expected Emil Igwenagu to make the roster last year, and he did. He's listed as the fourth TE ahead of UDFA Trey Burton.

10) Brent Celek is the emergency long snapper. Mark Sanchez is the emergency holder.
