The Eagles released cornerback Cary Williams after two seasons with the team.

By releasing Williams, 30, the Eagles opened $6.5 million in cap space. They also do not have either of last year's starting cornerbacks under contract, and they are expected to be aggressive trying to fill the position when free agency opens on March 10.

Williams signed with the Eagles in 2013 after winning the Super Bowl in Baltimore. He was their top cornerback during the past two seasons, never missing a start with the team. He was also the most consistent player during that span among a secondary that struggled both seasons.

Williams became a polarizing figure early in his tenure when he missed part of the offseason programs for personal and family reasons. He was outspoken throughout much of his Eagles career, too, but he also had more experience than most players in the locker room.

Williams started all 32 games and totaled 111 tackles, five interceptions, and 25 passes defended.

Williams had a cap number of nearly $8.2 million in 2015, which was the final year of a three-year, $17-million deal. By releasing him, the Eagles absorb around $1.67 of dead money, but the savings give the team almost $33 million in salary cap space.
