Eagles injuries: Dorenbos, Smallwood, Tobin seem headed for IR

Not that it matters at this point from a win-loss standpoint, but the Eagles enter the final three-game stretch of their season with long snapper Jon Dorenbos, rookie running back Wendell Smallwood and backup offensive lineman Matt Tobin all probably headed for season-ending injured reserve, Doug Pederson said Monday. They could be joined by safety Jaylen Watkins.

Dorenbos underwent wrist surgery Sunday night, Pederson said, and is definitely done. Smallwood and Tobin suffered Grade 2 MCL (knee) sprains and the timeframe for their recovery probably takes them past the end of the season. Watkins tore a finger tendon.

Pederson said the team is looking for answers in the case of starting right guard Brandon Brooks, who showed up sick Sunday and missed a game for the second time in three weeks. Pederson said Brooks remains the starter.

Oh, and Darren Sproles, who took that vicious hit while waiting to catch a punt, is in the concussion protocol.

There was one bit of good news: Pederson said the hamstring injury that left guard-turned-right tackle Allen Barbre suffered Sunday will keep him from practicing Wednesday but shouldn't keep him from this weekend's game at Baltimore.

The Eagles are auditioning long snappers, Pederson said. He said John DePalma, who understudied Dorenbos during training camp, is a possibility. The Eagles flubbed a 50-yard field-goal attempt in Sunday's loss to Washington when backup Brent Celek snapped the ball on the ground. Holder Donnie Jones was tackled for a 14-yard loss, giving Washington a short field for a touchdown drive.

Tobin, who replaced Barbre, was injured when the Redskins' Chris Baker rolled into his left knee on the play before Tobin couldn't get to pass rusher Ryan Kerrigan, whose blindside sack forced a Carson Wentz fumble and ended the Eagles' chances. Pederson said coaches didn't realize Tobin was injured; they could have slid protection over to help him, or run Josh Andrews in to play guard and moved Isaac Seumalo to tackle, but the game was in its closing seconds and the Eagles had no timeouts.
