Eagles also shopping Evan Mathis

ORLANDO -- Add another Pro Bowler to the list of players the Eagles are shopping.

Guard Evan Mathis has been placed on the market, according to NFL sources, who confirmed an NFL Network report Wednesday morning.

Mathis, who was voted first team All Pro by the Associated Press last season, wants a new contract, according to a source close to the situation. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, approached the Eagles about a new deal in February and the team responded by suggested a trade, NFL sources said.

Rosenhaus shopped Mathis around at the NFL combine in Indianapolis in February and since then, but there haven't been many nibbles from teams. The Eagles view Mathis as a very good guard in their system, which requires a good deal of zone blocking, but many other teams have been lukewarm about him because he's not considered a traditional mauler, league sources said.

The Eagles do like backup guard Allen Barbre and would be comfortable sliding him into Mathis' spot if he were to be traded, a source close to the situation said.

Eagles coach Chip Kelly said that Mathis had not conveyed to him that he wanted a new deal. Mathis signed a five-year, $25 million contract in March 2012 and is slated to earn $5.15 million in 2014. Factoring in signing bonuses, he was the 14th highest-paid guard in the NFL before the start of free agency.

Kelly lauded Mathis' work ethic and joked that the fact that he hadn't spoken to the 32-year-old guard would make a good story. The news that the Eagles are shopping Mathis comes after weeks of reports that wide receiver DeSean Jackson was available.

Mathis has been a pillar on the offensive line the last three seasons. Kelly noted that he played the most snaps of any player last season. While Mathis didn't earn trips to the Pro Bowl in 2011-12, many believed he deserved to go, but that he was slighted because he was a NFL journeyman his first six seasons.

The Eagles extended the contracts of two offensive linemen this offseason. Left tackle Jason Peters received a four-year, $41 million extension with around $19 million guaranteed and center Jason Kelce got a six-year, $37.5 million contract with $13 million guaranteed. Both players were entering the final years on their previous contract.
