Eagles-Redskins playing time analysis

Here is the Eagles' playing time distribution and what it means from Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Washington Redskins:

QUARTERBACK

Carson Wentz: 52 offensive snaps (100%)

Wentz played every snap even though he was sacked five times and hit 11 times. He also had two rushes. In the first quarter, he played two snaps with a torn jersey. Wentz has not missed a snap yet this season.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Allen Barbre: 52 (100%)

H. Vaitai: 52 (100%)%

Brandon Brooks: 52 (100%)

Jason Kelce: 52 (100%)

Jason Peters: 52 (100%)

The player who gets the obvious attention is Vaitai. Doug Pederson didn't consider taking Vaitai out of the game even with obvious struggles against Ryan Kerrigan, and he'll start again on Sunday against the Vikings. Jason Kelce suffered foot pain from plantar fasciitis in the game, but he also played each snap.

TIGHT END

Zach Ertz: 46 (88%)

Brent Celek: 13 (25%)

Trey Burton: 9 (17%)

Celek's 13 snaps were a surprise because he's a valuable blocking tight end. The Eagles could have used him more to help Vaitai, but they didn't play three tight end sets. They opened the game with all three on the field. Even though Ertz played 88 percent of the snaps, he was targeted only three times.

WIDE RECEIVER

Jordan Matthews: 47 (90%)

Nelson Agholor: 42 (81%)

Dorial Green-Beckham: 42 (81%)

Josh Huff: 9 (17%)

Green-Beckham's playing time continued to increase with the Eagles going with more three-receiver sets. Huff had a small role in this game. Matthews was targeted on seven of 22 pass attempts. Agholor and Green-Beckham both had four targets.

RUNNING BACK

Darren Sproles: 23 (44%)

Ryan Mathews: 11 (21%)

Wendell Smallwood: 10 (19%)

Kenjon Barner: 8 (15%)

Mathews was sick last Friday, but he was able to play. He carried the ball on nine of 11 snaps. That's a high usage rate, even if he didn't get much overall playing time. The Eagles trusted Sproles, who is a good blocker even at his size. Smallwood had four carries and a kick return touchdown, so his role can continue to grow.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Connor Barwin: 60 defensive snaps (81%)

Brandon Graham: 57 (77%)

Fletcher Cox: 55 (74%)

Beau Allen: 43 (58%)

Vinny Curry: 31 (42%)

Destiny Vaeao: 28 (38%)

Bennie Logan: 17 (23%)

Marcus Smith: 11 (15%)

Logan's 17 snaps were lower because of a groin injury. It's a significant strain and he could miss time. With Logan out, Allen and Vaeao played more. Look for Allen to start if Logan is out. Smith also left the game with a groin injury. Curry continues to lag behind Graham and Barwin in playing time – he's the clear the No. 3. The Eagles did not get a sack from their defensive linemen on Sunday. Cox was the only player credited with a quarterback hit.

LINEBACKER

Jordan Hicks: 74 (100%)

Nigel Bradham: 74 (100%)

Mychal Kendricks: 22 (30%)

Stephen Tulloch: 1 (1%)

Unlike the Lions game, the Eagles did not rotate in nickel. Hicks and Bradham stayed on the field. But that did not help a defense that struggled stopping the Redskins. They rushed for 230 yards and seven yards per carry. There were 33 rushing plays, so they it came against the Eagles' sub packages, too.

DEFENSIVE BACK

Malcolm Jenkins: 74 (100%)

Rodney McLeod: 73 (99%)

Jalen Mills: 73 (99%)

Nolan Carroll: 68 (92%)

Ron Brooks: 52 (70%)

Jaylen Watkins: 1 (1%)

Mills started on Sunday in place of Leodis McKelvin, who missed his third game with a hamstring injury. Carroll briefly left the game with a stinger, but was the other starter. Brooks suffered a left calf contusion, but did not leave the game. McLeod led the Eagles with 11 tackles, including 10 solo tackles. Jenkins had an interception returned for a touchdown and two passes defended, but he was also in coverage on both passing touchdowns.
