Chip Kelly: No trade offers for Evan Mathis in two years

The Eagles have not picked an offensive lineman yet in the draft and could be down another lineman if Evan Mathis has his way.

Mathis wants his contract restructured, but the Eagles have declined to renegotiate. They have told him and his agent that they could shop for another team and new deal, though. But Chip Kelly said the Eagles have yet to receive an offer for the 33-year-old Pro Bowl guard.

"Evan's been available to trade for two years now and we've never had an offer for him," Kelly said. "That's through his agent and him. They've asked if he could renegotiate a contract and see what he could get and we've obliged him with that, but we've never had an offer."

Asked if he expected Mathis to be back next season, Kelly, who said he hasn't spoken to Mathis recently, said, "That's a question for Evan."

Mathis, who is currently in Arizona, had no comment. He has not attended voluntary workouts at the NovaCare Complex over the last two weeks. He doesn't have to attend spring practices until mandatory minicamp in mid-June.

The Eagles have done little at the offensive line position this offseason other than releasing guard Todd Herremans. Many expected Kelly to address the line in the draft because of Herremans' departure, Mathis' possible departure and the advanced age of some of the key starters.

Mathis, who could still return, will be 34 in November. Jason Peters is 33. Allen Barbre, who is penciled in to start in place of Herremans, is 30. But the Eagles have yet to select an offensive lineman this draft and haven't chosen one in 19 rounds over three years.

Tackle Lane Johnson, the Eagles' top pick in 2013 and Kelly's first as head coach, was the last.

"It's not that we don't think that we need to create depth on the offensive line, but as you look at it right now, the only offensive lineman we lost is Todd," Kelly said. "We feel like getting Allen Barbre back off his injury, [Matt] Tobin and [Andrew] Gardner played really well for us."

Tobin or Gardner would be the likely candidates to replace Mathis if he were to be traded or released.

The Eagles opened the third day of the draft by trading their fourth round pick to the Lions for a 2016 third round selection.

"There weren't many offensive lineman left at that point in time," Kelly said. "It was pretty depleted by the time we got back on the clock."

Kelly didn't pick again until the sixth round when he took defensive backs LaCorey Shepherd and Randall Evans. Four of the Eagles' five draft picks have been defensive players and three have been defensive backs (Eric Rowe was chosen in the second round).

"There was a run in the second round," Kelly said of offensive lineman. "There were some guys that we were really excited about but they went before we picked."
