Alonso back at practice after 2-week absence

Linebacker Kiko Alonso was back on the practice field Tuesday afternoon after being sidelined for nearly two weeks with a concussion.

Linebacker Kiko Alonso was back on the practice field Tuesday afternoon after being sidelined for nearly two weeks because of a concussion.

"We'll ease him back in,'' Chip Kelly said before practice. "He's missed a few days. So he won't go through the full practice. He'll start going through the agility (drills) and stuff like that.

"I think mentally he's good, but he has been out for two weeks. So he'll go through agility drills and maybe a little 7-on-7. I don't know if they're going to put him in team (11-on-11). He should be good to go by the end of the week.''

Linebacker DeMeco Ryans, who is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon and didn't play in Sunday's preseason game against the Colts, didn't practice. Kelly said Ryans would return Wednesday when the Eagles begin three days of joint practices with the Baltimore Ravens at the NovaCare Complex. The only other two players Kelly listed as not practicing Tuesday were tight end Zach Ertz, who is recovering from surgery to repair a core muscle injury, and safety Earl Wolff.

"He says he can't run with his knee,'' Kelly said of Wolff.

Wolff is coming off of microfracture surgery on his knee. He wasn't able to participate in most of the Eagles' spring OTAs and minicamps.

This will be the third straight year that the Eagles have held joint practices with a preseason opponent. They practiced with the New England Patriots the last two years before the teams played each other.

"Different competition, different offense,'' Kelly said when asked about the benefits of practicing with another team. "(Our defense) will see a little bit more two-back (from the Ravens). We didn't see much two-back Sunday. So I think there are some things schematically that our defense is excited to get a chance to see.

"And then I think anytime you get a chance to compete against another team, when you have players out there like Steve Smith and Joe Flacco, that's always a great thing. When we practiced against the Patriots, we got a chance to go against Tom Brady.

"You have pass rushers like (Terrell) Suggs and (Elvis) Dumervil. So there will be some great matchups for our offensive line.

"I think the competition part of it is what we're really excited about.''

--Kelly said both quarterback Sam Bradford and running back DeMarco Murray, who sat out Sunday's preseason game against the Colts, are "full-go'' and will participate in the practices against the Ravens. Kelly already has said Bradford will play in Saturday night's preseason game against Baltimore.

--The Eagles coach praised nose tackle Bennie Logan, who played just nine snaps Sunday against the Colts, but had two tackles. "We're really pleased with him,'' Kelly said. "He's played really, really well. His knowledge and understanding of blocking schemes now going into Year 3 for him (is tremendous). He not only made some physical, tough plays (against the Colts), but knew what plays they were running based on what was happening. He back-doored once on a power play when the center blocked back on him and came deep around the center and made the tackle in the backfield. They tried to cut him off once when he was the nose, but the right guard couldn't get to him. So he stayed flat on the center and kind of flattened him down and made another play in the backfield. Then on another play, there was a twist game inside, but he recognized the blocking scheme immediately and came off of it.''

--Kelly said he thought both Matt Barkley and Tim Tebow played well Sunday. He said there were some miscommunication issues that weren't their fault. "I thought both of them, when they had time, threw the ball very well,'' Kelly said. "They were accurate with their throws. They both took advantage of their opportunities.''

--Kelly said the first offensive line group did a "decent'' job Sunday, particularly in pass protection. "We were pretty clean except for one play where Mark ended up slipping underneath the linebacker and getting a first down. We had a little too much push with our second and third groups. I thought the pocket collapsed a little bit on both Matt and Timmy a little bit. But overall, I thought the communication was good. And they knew what they were doing from an assignment standpoint."
