Kevin Newsome quits Temple football, sources

Kevin Newsome has quit the Temple University football team.

The former Penn State University transfer, who suffered a sprained AC joint last March, is expected to graduate from Temple this summer and, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, will not play this fall.

The 6-foot-2, 231-pound Newsome, a standout high school quarterback from Virginia, was expected to contribute at H-back this season.

Newsome, recruited as a quarterback, left Penn State in August 2011. He was out of football for a year while attending Tidewater (Va.) Community College, which does not have a football team.

Newsome arrived on Temple's campus a day before last year's training camp began. Consequently, he was not given the opportunity to battle Chris Coyer in camp for the starting job at quarterback.

He spent last season as the Owls' third-string quarterback while trying to get back into game shape. Newsome asked former Temple coach Steve Addazio to be switched to wide out or safety after a 36-27 loss to Maryland last September.
