Trading deadline comes and goes. Sixers listen and make offers, but nothing sticks

POSTED: Thursday, February 24, 2011, 10:06 PM

The Sixers listened to offers, and even might have made a few, but in the end there were no nibbles, let alone a bite.

A source said the Houston Rockets were looking to deal Shane Battier to the Sixers, but the Sixers don't need another perimeter player. Reports had the deal including Marreese Speights and Jason Kapono, but a source said it never really got that far.

Last week, the Portland Trail Blazers offered former Villanova forward Dante Cunningham and a second round pick for Speights, a source said. A source said today that the offer had been upgraded to Cunningham and a first round pick for Speights, but the Sixers again weren't interested in acquiring another perimeter player.

So the Sixers, winniner of 25 of their last 41, will ride with the horses they have for the rest of the season. Some will argue it's the wrong move, some will go the other way. Both have valid arguments.

Stay tuned.

The Sixers aren't playing Speights so why not get some value in the form of a future first round pick for him? Kopano is going to be bought out-and the remainder of his annual salary is probably more than Cunningham's? I don't get it.

The Rockets have away Battier for Hasheem Thabeet and a #1. Thabeet sucks. Speights doesn't. If it had been Kapono and a pick for Battier, OK. But Speights has upside, I think.

I hope this means Collins has plans for Speights. People complain about his game but the man is instant offense. Hopefully he learns and improves his game on the defensive side because he and the 76ers will greatly benefit from it. The man has athleticism and a huge upside. He just really needs time on the floor, but he has to earn it. The opportunities are there. Come on Speights prove me right!

No reason to move Speights. The guy is only getting better, RAPIDLY. He's a great shooter and has great offensive skills. And he's young. Really big. The Sixers know they got something in him...mine as well keep him around.

Now that Collins has decided to play Speights and he is responding to his chance, I'm glad they didn't pull the trigger on that deal. They really need a post player besides Hawes. Still, I'm surprised, given how little Collins was playing him prior to this week, that they didn't pull the trigger on the second deal: Cunningham and Portland's first round pick. That proposal was pretty good value.

If a 1st and Dante Cunningham was offered for Speights and not taken, somebody should be fired! A guy who doesn't even play, bad knees and probably will never be anything but a role player isn't traded for a 1st and a player? STUPID!!! This is why the sixers blow year after year.
