It hasn’t taken long for newly-acquired guard Charles Jenkins to impress 76ers coach Doug Collins. So much so, in fact, that Collins inserted him into the starting lineup for Friday’s game against the Miami Heat. Hey, if you’re going to prove yourself, might as well do it against the best of the best.
“My thought on that is with Ray Allen coming off the bench we have to have somebody that can chase him a little bit and I’m hoping Smoke (Royal Ivey) can chase him a little bit. He’s one of our better guys chasing guys off screens. I was happy with the way Charles played the other night (in Atlanta). Let’s get him out there and see what he can do with our group.”
Jenkins, in his second season out of Hofstra, was picked up by the Sixers from the Golden State Warriors for a conditional pick a couple of weeks ago. He started 28 games last season for the Warriors, but saw limited playing time this season. He’s a strong, 6-3, 215-pounder who can play both guard spots.
“Bob Fitzgerald, who is the announcer for the Warriors, had texted me about what a tremendous young guy (Jenkins) was, what a hard worker he was and what a great mid-range shooter he was. I saw that the other day. He shot the mid-range shot very well. But what I was happy with was that he had 5 assists and he made some plays off the dribble for us which is something that when you play Miami you have to have playmakers on the floor.”
It certainly appears to be an audition from here on out for Jenkins as the Sixers are in need now and in the future for a backup to Jrue Holiday. In just under 30 minutes against Atlanta on Wednesday, Jenkins collected 7 points and 5 assists to go with a couple of steals and rebounds.
This is a Philly style player like Holliday, Allen, and T Young. Turner, Bynum, Hawes, Kwame and N Young certainly not.— tomficara- Holiday is not the great player the Sixer's want him to be .. sure not untouchable!! Way too many turnovers & very poor shot selection at times and also he dribbles way too much!— bill poore
