Wednesday Is Iverson's Guarantee Day

Alllen Iverson's contract with the 76ers will be guaranteed for the remainder of the season if he is on the roster Wednesday.

Because of a quirk in the calendar, Allen Iverson can have his one-year contract with the 76ers guaranteed for the remainder of the season a little sooner than anyone thought.

Actually, Wednesday.

The date for make-good or partially guaranteed contracts to be guaranteed is usually Jan. 10, with a 48-hour waiver preceding it. But this year, because Jan. 8 falls on a Sunday when the NBA offices are closed, the waiver period has been moved to Jan. 6.

Iverson signed a non-guaranteed deal worth a pro-rated $1.3 million Dec. 2. He has appeared in 9 games and has missed 4 with an arthritic left knee and other ailments.

''Allen has done a good job for us,'' said Sixers president/general manager Ed Stefanski.

Stefanski did not say outright that Iverson would be guaranteed, but that certainly appears to be the case.

Teams can begin signing players to 10-day contracts Tuesday.

As for speculation about the Sixers' interest in acquiring Tracy McGrady from the Houston Rockets, multiple sources indicate that, while the Sixers have some interest and have been in contact with the Rockets, no specific players have been discussed. The Rockets have also made it clear that, while McGrady has taken a leave of absence from the team, this is is likely to be a long process.

The Rockets also have the option of simply allowing McGrady's $23 million contract to expire June 30, thereby deducting that amount from their salary cap.
