Warriors GM: No Ellis deal
Golden State Warriors guard Monta Ellis has been a hot name in various NBA trade rumors, including a proposed deal that would send him to the Sixers for Andre Iguodala.
But not so fast, says Warriors GM Larry Riley.
“We are not shopping Monta Ellis," he told Sports Illustrated's Zach Lowe. "It is business as usual here. I think you have to look at what just happened in the Finals — it seemed like Dallas played pretty small guards throughout that series with Miami and did a pretty good job of it. Our problem is not the small backcourt [of Ellis and Stephen Curry]. Our problem is defense.”
“We can move forward with this team. Obviously it would be a nice thing if we could acquire a point guard who was 6-foot-4 to come off the bench, or a 2-guard who was 6-5 and could guard point guards — someone off the bench who is a bit longer. But that backcourt in Dallas was not long either. But when I mention Dallas, you have to give Jason Kidd credit, too — he’s a great defender. But they still had times when they had both J.J. Barea and Jason Terry on the floor.”
Perhaps, Riley just wanted to put an end to the speculation, or maybe this is just posturing with the NBA draft a week away.
@doncornelius, it wasnt Billy King who gave Iggy that contract....it was your home town hero, Stefanski. The NBA is rife with bad contracts. Bad contract for bad contract is standard operating procedure. audrina- almost completely meaningless article.
gm says "hey, were just TALKING. we prob not gonna trade him cause defense wins, right?"
he will be traded.
igoudala has a good chance of being on the sixers next season deal with it. he is a solid scorer good rebounder, good defender and passer, turner holiday and meeks if they step up their game and get a REAL center not the fraud they have now the team defense will get better along with rebounding should translate to more wins higher seed get another veteran who can shoot the basketball. only 9
"Our problem is defense." Must be why they are so keen on hanging on to Monta... oh wait. XD conceptual_bro
Well.. IF!! iguodala returns... Make him a DEFENSIVE! POST UP! 2! Jrue. Iguodala. Thad. Brand. Donnatas or Tyler. But can Tyler pass the ball..? I'm hearing that's donnatas strength passing. And from the value Collins places in hawes that's what he wants from his bigs. A high post big to keep the lane open. We have options. Iguodala is the key.. But brand plays high.. But he doesn't pass like that.. Yunno? Keep brand shooting. I think Tyler... Would be a better fit with brand.. BRAND NEEDS HELP WITH CONTROLLING THE PAINT! and rebounding. 6'11 260 AND 20! so let's say 6'9.. 6'10. My list has gotten VERY SHORT! Trade down for Tyler. Donnatas. Vucevic. And faried. Faried and Tyler would be nice. ( iguodala lou and the 50th to Denver for j.r. Smith mozgov and the 23rd pick.) and we keep the 16th. Lol! Jrue Meeks Thad brand Tyler. Turner smith brackins faried hawes. Just a scenario. Reminding management. If you willing to take the time and think about it.. And roll the dice there are options. With faried and Tyler that's probably 12-15 more boards 4 more blocks per game. J.r. Probably cancels Iguodala's floor game. But brings better shooting and 1 on 1 skills. Come on... WE ARE ON THE CLOCK!! combocancer1975
To the people who are saying Ellis has no defense, he was 3rd this season in steals with 2.1 behind Paul 2.35 and Rondo 2.25. Also, Golden State does not even focus on defense. To get that many steals on a team that plays no defense is pretty solid. If Rose or Wade was on Golden State, I bet the same doubters will be saying the exact same thing ie. too short, volume shooter and no defense. Even though Ellis is short at 6'3 for a SG, Meeks at 6'4 started and played a lot of minutes at that position. Collins will have a scheme to fit Ellis in the game. When everyone was clamoring we needed a go-to scorer this past season and Ellis who has a reliable jump shot at 45.1% around the perimeter even at averaging 20 shots per game, everyone goes bonkers in not wanting to trade AI9 away for a scorer. Ellis will allow the team to have open looks and create better spacing since defenses will focus on him. Also, Turner's confidence will be even greater since Iggy is not around. Turner has played with more aggression and confidence when Iggy is scheduled not to play. Brand and Young will also benefit since defense will be hesitant in clogging the lanes and paint when Ellis is on the court. Manok
THANK YOU MANOK- Couldn't say it better myself. Everyone's screaming for iggy to be traded and for us to get a number one scorer and this does both. Now everyone's saying that a 45% shoots too much. LOL- I just think Jonkap doesn't want to look like an idiot for saying Iggy's untradeable. 76ers in 2076
Manok,
Steals steals.. steals is a daredevil stat, meaning a very high steals avg is 2.5/game. The REST of the time, your man is left OPEN and forcing teammates to come off their man. Ellis, unlike Rondo and Paul, is not known to stick his man. That's the problem. He tries to be AI without AI's offensive game. A glorified Lou Williams. He ain't getting you a championship. Maybe we can aim to be the new Golden State Warriors of the East. xing
xing- of course ellis doesn't win you a championship! but then again who does. Miami had arguably the best two players in the league and they didn't win the championship either. There's no quick fix. You make trades to make your team better. Right now we need a two guard who can score EVERY NIGHT and a big man who can defend the paint every night. Monte Ellis has proven he can be a scorer EVERY NIGHT. Not Lou i'll give you two good game and one bad game. This guy's a couple inches taller and a more consistent shooter (45% to 41% for Lou last year) therefore a more consistent scorer. We've been screaming for years we have too many wing players and need a consistent scoring two guard. How are we not killing two birds with one stone here? 76ers in 2076
xing - You are correct about steals being a daredevil stat. However, Rondo and Paul play in a defensive minded team. Defensive minded teams know how to rotate off their man to cover for a teammate trying to get a steal. Ellis does not play on a team that even tries to do this. Even with Collins schemes if a player goes for a steal, they know how to rotate. With Golden States's defense, they do not how to rotate causing open looks. Manok- Ellis doesn't fit on this "defensive" team Collins has built. End of story. And Dallas won because of their bigs. 7 ft Dirk and Chandler. Miami's two weaknesses were PG and their lack of size. Sixers don't have anyone good that is over 6' 8 ,Boston traded away Perkins and Shaq was hurt and Chicago only had defensive bigs because Boozer is just flat out awful. So Dallas was the first team that could exploit both of those weaknesses. It is really that simple. Had Rondo and SHaq not been hurt that would have been a different series.
- How doesn't Ellis fit? Meeks or even Lou didn't initially fit in Collins defensive schemes. Even in some games, Lou and Meeks played at the same time making them a small backcourt, but over time they knew how to play together and rotate on defense.
Also, Dallas won as a team not as individuals, a sum of the whole. When Dirk wasn't his best Terry stepped up, when Terry wasn't up to par Berea or Marion stepped up. Chandler was their anchor on defense. If it was only Dirk and Chandler playing as individuals, then Dallas would of lost. Manok - How doesn't Ellis fit?
