The Search For Backcourt Help

POSTED: Monday, July 20, 2009, 8:08 PM

The 76ers have been contacting a variety of free agent guards to help fill out the roster for the coming season. That list, according to a source familiar with the situation, includes Juan Dixon, who has played before for new Sixers coach Eddie Jordan with the Washington Wizards.

In no particular order, the Sixers have also reached out to Bobby Jackson, Jason Hart, Carlos Arroyo, Tyronn Lue and Brevin Knight.

Lou Williams, Willie Green and first-round draft choice Jrue Holiday are the Sixers' only guards for the moment, although Andre Iguodala is likely to log some minutes in the backcourt. President/general manager Ed Stefanski has been searching for an additional backcourt player who can play some minutes and help with the development of Williams and Holiday.

All of this is going on as the Sixers wait for a resolution of their situation with unrestricted free agent Andre Miller.

More on that coming in tomorrow's Daily News.

Development of Williams??? The guy has been in the league long enough...it's either he can play and contribute or he can't. Just let the kid play!!

Loosing Miller is tremendous, he is worth the money considering rebuilding the backcourt and now seeking other castoff guards. It will be hard to maintain stability with new proven not to be stable point guards. "Playoffs", do better in 2010. I am lifer Sixer fan born and raised

Does this mean the Sixers are not going to bring back Christmas. They still have no one to shoot. I know Willie Green is an integral part of the team (sic). The Sixers are going to be terrible. Why not bring in Christmas for a year and see what he got. He could be a diamond in the rough. Or not, but it only cost you pennies to find out.

slick457, the money isnt the problem for Andre, it's the length of the contract that they dont agree on. The Sixer, and I agree with them, want to sign him to a one year deal, while Andre wants 3 years. What they need to do is face the facts that not many teams are going to give a 35 year old point guard a long term contract. The Sixers will either agree to terms on a one year contract and go to the playoffs next year and get blown out in the first round again OR get someone to fill the gap, go through the growing pains, and know that 2010 and beyond will be their year to compete. My advice, tank next year and get a good pick in a more talent draft through the lottery and win a championship within the following 3-4 years cuz it's not going to happen when you go to the playoffs and exit early every year.

with the exception of Dixon & Jackson, the four others are straight garbage. as for Williams, I seriously doubt he'll ever be a point guard. his early years in the league he was tutored by Iverson. nuff said. GO SIXERS !

Bobby Jackson was a helluva 6th man for Sacramento....10 years ago. WTF - Stefanski is just flat out awful.

Figured these would be the guys they would be looking at. I always liked Jackson but haven't seen him play in a while, what's left in the tank? Maybe enough for what the Sixers are looking for? Dixon always seemed like an under sized 2 to me.

Stefanski is grasping at straws trying to replace their most "effective" player the last several seasons in Miller. The Sixers thought they had problems last year with fans not attending games. Wait until they send out a team without Miller. It's easy to say tank next season, but ownership won't accept an empty arena on a regular basis.

Trade Iggy to the bulls for Heinrich...Heinrich can be the point guard until Jrue is ready...then Heinrich can move to the shooting guard position with Jrue at the point. Heinrich is a lot bigger that people think...6'3" 190...and still only 27 years old. Plus, he can shoot the three.

Why did they sign Elton Brand? If they lose Miller the Elton Brand deal will be a total waste no matter how healthy he is.

The Sixers should take a look at Jenner who is a point guard for the Portland rookie league team, and possibly Donte Cunningham if he is released by Portland as well.

Get one of the Laker point guards like Sasha or Farmar. Lakers only need Brown and Fischer and only one of the previously mentioned. I think their contracts are only $5M - $2M, respectively. Lakers need teh cap space.

Miller's offensive skill set is not compatible with Elton Brand's game. Miller is not a 3-point threat, and not a particularly effective penetrate-and-dish PG. He's a midrange jumpshooter, and solid post-up PG, but that happens to be the same area of the floor Brand needs to operate. We need a PG with the ability to stretch the floor with the 3-ball. Lou actually has the more compatible skillset with EB's game. He just needs to work harder in being more consistent out on the court.
