Sixers Adding Brezec

POSTED: Tuesday, August 4, 2009, 4:50 PM

The 76ers have reached an agreement in principle to sign veteran center Primoz Brezec, according to multiple sources.

The deal is supposedly for one year at the minimum for a player with seven seasons of service in the NBA.

The 7-1 Brezec, 29, is expected to come to Philadelphia sometime next week. He is currently playing with the Slovenian National Team.

Brezec spent last season in Italy after logging time with the Indiana Pacers, the Charlotte Bobcats, the Detroit Pistons and the Toronto Raptors.

More coming in tomorrow's Daily News.

One of these things is not like the other. Which one? The Cavs got Shaq. The Magic got Carter. The Celtics got Rasheed. The Wizards got Miller and Foye. The Pistons got Villanueva and Gordon. THE SIXERS GOT KOPONO AND BREZEC. Sixers = Disaster waiting to happen

This is it, Primoz clearly moves the sixers to the top of the eastern conference heap. This guy is a stud. No rest for the weary though Eddie, go out and add Rafal Bigus "Mgligus" to the fold and you can pretty much carve the sixers names in the 2010 title trophy.

Seriously. This team almost beat Orlando in the first round. Why do they keep going backward? They weren't that far away with the talent they had. Yes, Boston and Cleveland will be better this year than the 76ers, but the following year I really thought the Sixers could compete and be fun to watch. But the moves they've made are just horrible.

This actually is a very solid pickup. Check out his numbers with charlotte. Id take this guy over sammy dalembert any day of the week. Its not meant to be the blockbuster pickup for us. This guy is a very solid rebounding big man off the bench. Sixers will be fine if brand is healthy.

Sammy better watch his back. There is a new stiff in town. All jokes aside for anyone that said signing Big Baby would take minutes. Adding talent is never a bad thing. Signing Brezec is a nothing move. I don't want to be negative but how can you look at what other teams have done and feel good about the Sixers. STIFFanski took the summer off. Unless every player on this team takes their game to another level Dileo will be in Secaucus with that clueless look onn his face.

How come the Sixers will not just go around the city and sign some ball players from some on the city playgrounds? I bet you there will be some who could bring excitement, play hard every game, and be more than willing to take the league's minute salary. I'm not joking either. This is just sad that they feel the need to load up on 15th man talent.

People that try to preach patience when you see other teams that are also over the cap that also have no realistic shot to win a championship how realistic is that. To compare a baseball roster to a basketball roster is not realistic. Most basketball team only go 10 deep in the rotation. There is less maneuverability to make mistakes. People have been patient for years. Patient when they traded Malone, patient when the traded Barkley. Patient when then drafted Bradley. Patient when they traded for Mutumbo.

ALMOST doesnt count 76er. The point is they didnt beat them and they're not good enough to compete with teams like Boston or Orlando or Cleveland. They sixers need to get worse in order to get better. No one knows their role on this team. No real 3pt shooter since Korver left. They havent had a real center since Mutumbo and before that it wasnt since the 80s. Thats horrible. This team is mediocre at best. If they keep going the way they are going they are gonna be a playoff team each year that gets to round 1 or 2 at the most and then get lousy draft picks and just be stuck in mediocrity. They need to get pretty bad so they can stock up on lottery picks, dump some salary and then they can rebuild. Keep Young, Holiday, Speights, maybe Iggy and get rid of everyone else

We basically picked up a guy who can shoot when wide open, something Dalembert couldn't do. Basically, we completed one complete center by having Brezec and Dalembert... too bad it's two separate people.

you gotta feel for those poor souls in the Sixers ticket office, just trying to meet their sales quotas and keep their jobs in this tough economy. talk about not having a full deck to play with. sadly, this is probably an upgrade over Sammy (actually, European centers with range are usually a good fit for the Princeton offense -- if he can dish)

e understand how the NBA works in order to be successful a GM needs to not give a max contract to a 30 year old coming off micro fracture surgery. All that Stefanski has done for this team is ensure a cycle of mediocrity. They should have let Iguodala walk, and saved their cap space from last season. The only way to get better in this league is to get lucky in the lottery, or sign a young superstar. Having your capped tied up with Elton Brand and Iggy is not a way to run a successful franchise.

Public relations nightmare!!!! The Sixers want your tired, your poor, any player with NBA experience who will accept the NBA minimum. You have two more spots to fill with no names at the minimum. There should be some real creative marketing ploys to sell tickets this coming season. Why else would you go to a game?

You people will all eat your words when Brezek, Kapono, and Ivey have breakout seasons and Jordan becomes coach of the year. More likely the Sixers will be selling tickets at half price a quarter of the way through the season. Jones, a bonfide NBA loser, has a real shot at breaking Roy Rubin's 9 and 73 season with this array of useless pickups. And Jrue Holliday is a no shot stiff. This downward spiral starts at the top. Snyder needs to go and take Stefanski with him.

Tough fans. This season really comes down to Brand being healthy and finding a way to fit him in the sixer's game plan. Those are 2 big ifs, but he's been an all-star before. If he reaches that level again with the other sixers young guys improving, this could be a much improved team.

people, don't you realize he's just a roster filler, SHEESH!!!! Why should Ed cut minutes for Speights and Jason and stop their development by signing some overpriced over the hill center. He may turn out to be good and if not, his loss. That's why Ed gave him a one year deal to prove himself NBA worthy, just like Ivey. By the way, it's not Brand's deal that's hurting the team, it's Sammy and Willie's deal which will be expiring the following season and possibly used as trade bait. People who said "WE SHOULD'VE GOTTEN SHAQ" "WE SHOULD'VE GOTTEN THIS STAR OR THAT STAR, ETC." really don't understand what planning for the future is all about. I'm not saying this guy is a stud, but it's good that Ed is giving him a chance to earn his right to be in the NBA.

Unfortunately, Ed is finding out just how the League that David (Stern) built works. To become a championship caliber team requires tanking at least one season and preferably two in order to get a young superstar or get quality picks for trading purposes, like the Celtics. This is a star-driven league, period. The Sixers decided to get Brand, a nice player when not injured, but not a star like James or Bryant or Nowitzki, not a guy who can virtually carry a team. They also hitched their wagon to Iguodala and Dalembert, the former another good player, not a star, the latter a mediocrity who has been stealing money for years. This may be hindsight, but I did not like the Brand signing, because, even if healthy, he could not fit into a young, run and gun team which, if not a championship team, was at least entertaining and capable of making the playoffs for one round and, with the addition of a star who could fit the system, a team capable of going deeper. On the other hand, Brand is fine for a half-court offense, but the rest of the team is not; thus, Stefanski created two separate teams, and now has brought in a weak coach with a "system" to put it all together, which will just not happen. Hopefully, they will be so bad that a lottery pick beckons, which will enable them to begin the long, hard climb to greatness. Whether Stefanski, any more than King, is the right person remains to be seen, but thus far it does not look good.

you guys are so ungrateful; it's sickening! Players can get better. Yeah, okay, we have some no names but who knows what will happen during the season. He may be better than you expect him to turn out. I like Royal Ivey also. I don't expect him to do much except run the ball up the court. Chauncey Billups sucked for a few seasons and look at him; he's a beast! I still believe this team will be better.

If the plan is to get as horrible as possible and then finally get a lottery pick, then well done so far. If they are serious about trying to win with these scrubs then I'll watch as many games this season as I have in the last three years...ZERO!!! What a pathetic franchise.

Juiceman222: With all due respect your making no sense at all. Willie Green is a bench player and he is getting paid like one. Dalembert has be playing like a stiff. But the amount he makes is as bad as the trade kicker that pretty much makes his untradable. Having said all of that the Sixers were WAY under the cap before STIFFanksi squandered it on a 6'8" PF coming off an injury without working him out. Iguodala may take his game to the next level he may not, but he is getting paid like a guy that averages in 20 - 25 point per game. He has done that yet. STIFFanksi put us here not Dalembert and Green contract. Cap wise we were sitting pretty until Stefanski came along.

Juiceman222 How do you assume Billy king signs Brand. Deal with reality. You don't have to sign a FA to improve the team. You make trades or draft well. If you're going to start Lou Willaims and sign a backup why draft a guy to be your third PG when you have good SG on the board. That was a luxury pick, we can't afford luxury! An average starting SG would be better than Willie Green's 9 points per game. Wayne Ellington couldn't start for this team??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

BigVilFromWestPhil - Billy King would have signed Brand, it was talked about. You have to admit that everyone was all about the Brand signing.. If he can come back healthy and play like the All Star player he was then the Sixers will be pretty good..

You have to add to your roster 14 players idiots. We have no money under the cap until Sammy D and Willie Green are off the books in 2 years. That was Billy King's mistake. Kapono provides outside shooting. We traded a player we didn't need for one we needed good move.

gallen024: I agree he discussed Brand. That doesn't mean he was going to sign him. Maybe King would have been smart enough to work him out before signing him. He doesn't have the same explosion he did before the Achilles injury. I hope he does well. I don't think he fits but that what the coach is paid for to make the pieces work. He going to need to put up at least 20 points a game while not taking from his teammates game.

big vil, Willie is too inconsistent for his contract, therefore untradable possibly until the last year of his contract. Sammy, untradable possibly until the final year of his contract. Jason Smith, who could you possibly get for him? And Why trade the other guys just yet(Brand, Iggy, Thad, Speights)? Lastly, we drafted pretty good with the picks we had with Mareese and Jrue. If King was smart, he wouldn't have gave ridiculous contracts to, at best, a bunch of bench players (Kenny Thomas, Brian Skinner, Corliss Williamson, Aaron McKie, Greg Buckner, Glenn Robinson, traded a 3rd 1st round pick for 2 second round picks who were ultimately cut before the season started).

Come on folks the guy is 7'1". The Sixers have no shot blockers, he's got to at least have the ability just by his size to change some shots while he is on the floor......Theo had a big mouth, and is old...that is why he is gone....

Juiceman222: I brought up King because you named players he drafted and credited them to the current front office. Willie Green is a backup he is getting paid like a backup. and I'm not saying he is a good backup either. His contract is not killing us. I agree its not helping us either. We had the most cap space in the league before Stefanski blew it all. If you can't sign players and no one wants the player you have. Then it even more imperative to draft a player that can help you NOW. That's how Stefanki could have done something to help this team. Are you telling Wayne Ellington wouldn't look good on this team, that he couldn't start for this team? Not saying Jrue won't be good at some point. Who can help us NOW.

Juiceman222: I just think there are different ways to help the team. Not to turn it to a Billy King conversation. Who could help us more right now Ellington or Holliday?

Wow. These posts are indicative of people who expect a bit too much. With the way things are going in the East, we don't have a chance. So, the best thing to do is find guys who can help the Princeton Offense Jordan runs. A backup big man with a decent jumper can actually help. NOBODY they picked up was EVER going to put us over the top unless we got Kobe, LeBron, Wade, or Howard. Calm down. It's not like the Sixers were one piece away or anything.
