On Monday night in Charlotte, the 76ers had played a full half of basketball plus another two-plus minutes into the third quarter before it happened. While handling the ball along the right side of the offensive end of the court, point guard Jrue Holliday was stripped by Bobcat guard Reggie Williams. Charlotte then quickly raced down the court and forward Corey Maggette converted a reverse layup. It was the first time the Bobcats had converted a Sixers turnover into points. And it came on the Sixers’ second turnover of the game.

When you really think about it, it is quite amazing. There were no forced passes, no dribbling off a foot, not a single offensive foul or any other type of giveaway that gave Charlotte instant points. If this was just one example, it certainly would be less impressive. But it has become commonplace for this team to treasure the basketball as if their very life depended on it.

The Sixers lead the league in fewest giveaways at 10.4 a game. They are almost three turnovers fewer han the next team and could become the lowest turnover team since the stat began being kept. The 2005-06 Detroit Pistons currently hold that distinction when they averaged 11.4 turnovers a game.

“It’s something that we emphasize,” said coach Doug Collins. “We just know that we have to value that ball. When we turn that ball over teams are going to run out on us. We went up 10 (Monday), they scored, then we turned the ball over and gave them a three-point play and all of the sudden it’s a five-point game. Those turnovers are deadly, especially in the open court. That’s something that we talk about over and over again. Jrue has been great with that. Lou (Williams) has been great with that and Andre (Iguodala) had nine assists. The guys do a good job.

It is very much a part of why the Sixers have found so much success so far this season – Collins has a plan of action, relays it to his team, and they carry it out. It really has pretty much been that plain and simple.

When he took the job before last season, the coach talked of his desire to protect their home court. He quickly pointed out that the previous season had accumulated only XX wins at home and he saw that as a key component in improving the team. Also, with his goal of making the organization relevant again, he knew that winning in front of the home fans would certainly begin to spark more interest.

Last year the team went 25-15 at the Wells Fargo Center, and so far this year they are 13-5. The mission is getting accomplished.

Coming into this season, Collins again wanted his team to keep improving at home but also insisted on a winning record on the road. After Monday, they are now 7-4 in that category. But none of Collins’ wishes have been carried out by his club better than the desire for fewer turnovers.

What is most impressive about the lack of giveaways is that this team shares the ball more than any other club in the NBA, with eight players averaging nine points or more and led by Williams at 15.9. On Monday there were at least eight possessions in which there were five or more passes/handoffs. There is no big-man presence in which the ball gets dumped down low and a shot is taken. Ball movement is a priority and it usually gets to where it’s intended. And that may be the biggest reason for this 20-9 record.

Hadn't gone to a sixers game in years until this year. Going to my second game on Friday. Love watching this team. Great defense, sharing the ball, hustle. Can't ask for more. More people should go watch these guys

If I still lived in the area I'd take in a few games, but I'm approximately 750 miles away, although them winning a championship is matter of factly a dream at best, these guys are fun to watch, keep up the tight D fellas, just sayin'...

We also - according to the stats have the 3rd fewest shots between 0-3 feet (i.e. we do not take the ball to the rim), and we have the 3rd most shots from 10-23 feet (the dreaded "long 2's")...in our zeal to "value the basketball", we settle for jumpers versus taking the ball to the rim...which can lead to more turnovers, but it also gets youo to the line, gets the other team (and their players) in foul trouble, and other positive things. It is this philosophy - an offense that shoots more jumpers and de-emphasizes geetting to the rim - that works in favor of a guy like Meeks and against a guy like Turner ( who is much better than Meeks at creating off of the bounce).

For now, this strategy of Collins' is working, but when we get to April and May, and tems like the Bulls and Heat are going to make it hard to get any clean looks from the perimeter, the lack of taking the ball to the rim and getting to the linemwill be a problem for this offense...as we have already seen in our two games with the Heat.

couldn't agree more bebop. these guys dont like getting to the rim b/c they don't knock down their free throws but at the end of the day getting starters in foul trouble and having a better opportunity to put points on the board and avoid 5 minute droughts like the other night should trump that. i love what dc has done hear and it kills me to say this but......like andy reid, this guy gets the most out of his players but i wish he let someone else work the X's and O's of the game.

collins is maximizing the overall output which can be obtained from this somewhat quirky roster - minimizing turnovers is one key to his formula. moving to realistic title contention can only be achieved by garnering one or two more offensive difference makers (men who do not need a system to dominate an opponent) who have the quickness, intelligence, and desire to play defense in this scheme. since the CBA didn't really change the player movement landscape, the only way to get those two players without gutting the roster (and thus treading water at best) is to draft the players or hope unrestricted free agents choose philly at a lower salary because they see the opportunity to win big here. crossing my fingers, but it is not likely either of those two things will be happening very soon.

I noticed that Jrue kicked out to Meeks or Lou on the perimeter after he'd blown by someone and had a clear look at a very high percentage shot from close range. They really try to get the outside stuff going, which in theory would make it easier to penetrate. It's not broken yet, and unlike with the Bulls and the injured Rose, the Sixers don't rely on one guy. Lou could go down and they'd be ok. Maybe even Iggy and Jrue. Who would've said they'd be 20-9 with Hawes not playing much and Brand missing a lot of time, relying on rookie big men?!?!

Again, let's not talk championship this year. Be patient. This is 2006 or at best 2007 of the Phillies' recent run. It's 2000 of the Eagles run, the second with Andy Reid. Give it time to build. Collins has done wonders in one year plus a strike-shortened offseason.
