Sixers bring in more draft prospects

POSTED: Wednesday, June 13, 2012, 2:56 PM

The Sixers will continue predraft workouts on Thursday, bringing in three players -- Baylor's Quincy Miller, Washington's Terrence Ross and Virginia's Mike Scott.

Miller, 6-9, 210, is leaving Baylor after one season. He initially said he was going to remain with the Bears but then changed his mind and entered the draft. He averaged 10.6 points and 4.9 rebounds in 24 minutes per game. According to reports, he struggled as a defender and with his jumpshot as a freshman. He is projected as a late first-round pick

Ross, a 6-6 shooting guard who was All-Pac 12, left Washington after two seasons. He averaged 16.4 points and 6.4 rebounds in 31.1 minutes per game for the Huskies. Scouts compare him to former Temple star Eddie Jones. He is projected as a late lottery pick.

Scott, a 6-9, 242-pound power forward was named All-ACC after averaging 18 points and 8.3 rebounds. He shot 56.3 percent from the field. Scott's stock has been rising, but he is projected as a mid to late second round.

The Sixers are bringing in additional players Friday, although they have not announced the players.

The Sixers have the 15th pick in the first round in the June 28 draft and the 45th and 54th pick overall in Round 2.

Ross is the real deal. I like the comparison to Eddie except he can't guard like Eddie. he does have Eddie's catch and shoot ability and his ability to finish on the break. Also much like Eddie he can play off the ball in the 1/2 court which is needed on a team loaded with ballhogs.

I saw a lot of Quincy Miller, he started off slowly due to injury but by the end of the season he was the best player on Baylor. That says a lot considering they had the highly touted Perry Jones III, JUCO star guard Pierre Jackson and their returning scorer Quincey Acy. The problem with Miller is position, after his injury he never fully regained his athleticism so he played a lot on the post and along the baseline. He might be too thin to do that in the NBA but he can score.

Ok I know I'm overly hyped for this guy but here's what swishscout.com says about Ross...
•Explosive athlete, outstanding vertical leap, great end-to-end speed, quick first step and burst, superb body control and contortion around the rim
•Midrange marksman with great depth out to NBA 3-point range, great off ball player and spot up shooter coming off screens, always squared and ready to shoot, high release point
•Can create his own shot off the dribble, ability to set up for jumper or attack rim, nice crossover and step back dribble for jumper (16.4 pt. per as soph.)
•Natural feel for the game, high basketball IQ, good decision maker, versatile, assertive play maker, active rebounder (6.4 reb. per)
•Frail frame in need of strength, 5-10 pounds of muscle to fill out body, struggles to finish through contact
•Can become too hesitant to isolate, doesn’t need ball to be effective but becomes confined to being a spot up threat

mtairy:good stuff...Ross is the true Jodie Meeks upgrade...At 6'7.5",a really good spot up shooter who is scintallating on the break...and could be there at #15...Quincy Miller, the talented Freshman of the Year in the Big 12, is regarded as a poor man's Durant, and IMO, came out too early...He is a talented offensive player in the midrange game (off the dribble, super handle), but at this time is way too weak physically, and scouts are convinced he's not healthy yet(tore up his knee senior year in HS)...His stock has dropped some, and should be viewed more as long range potential...the last guy, Mike Scott, is smart player with a high motor as a quick power forward...He's impressed in workouts, is moving up, but has a chance to be there at pick #45... But Thursday, to me, is all about Terrence Ross... a very good player...who fits a need.

It's a strange mix, as usually one likes to see similar type players go up against each other during these workouts to get a stronger gage on certain abilities...Scanning the various draft and prospect sites (and thanks mtairy,swishscout.com's a good one to add!),many of the teams pre-announce their invites for workouts in the "notes" sections...The Sixers seem to be much more secretive, as fans are basically finding out a day before guys come to town...Is it because this process can become embarrassing, as some teams may have a hard time (agents) getting committments and having the players they want to see show up?...Hope that's not the case here..Seems like a fun place to play, right?

Can we draft some size please? Do we have enough wing players? We have one decent big man and that"s Lavoy Allen. Elton Brand is going off to play 20 minutes for a team that is going to contend for a ring. We need size people and plenty of it. Where is Terrance Ross going to play?

bgwillie:Terrance Ross is an athletic wing, and probably would be use plenty as DC often goes with a smaller, athletic rotation...The kid fits the Sixers' strength of up tempo basketball, as he has an above the rim game with incredible body contro to finish...But mainly...he's a shooter, and can really run without the ball around screens, another bigtime need for the Sixers...I'm with you, they need physicality on the frontline as well....Myers Leonard has move up into the lottery, Arnett Moultrie will be around, as may John Henson...If they were smart,a bullvon with skills ,Royce White would be an option, as he plays through contact better than anyone available...They also have interest in the big from Norfolk State...Kyle O'Quinn...If they don't draft size, they'll get some come July.

Why does it seem like they the prospects they need to be looking at haven't come in yet. Just curious as to what they may be planning.

Vil:Very curious...I went on about that for a long time yesterday...Terrence Ross represents the first viable selection at #15...out of the 24 players that have worked out(that number includes today)...First was the local favors (Zach Rosen,Maalik Wayns,Dominic Cheek,Michael Eric,Scoop Jardine,Adebayo)...about 5 more players representing potential second round material (Kim English,Darius Odom-Johnson,Kyle O'Quinn,Scott Machado,Alex Young)...At least Doron Lamb MAY be a first rounder...Again, many other teams have been active already in the process, working out their realistic first round options since June 1...My theory is that DC himself wanted to see "up close and personal" the prospects at the Combine(as well as participating in the interview process, where the brass met with 18 guys)...before extending invites to the prospects that interested them...Now,IMO,it's like getting a reservation at a swanky restaurant last second, but instead your dealing with pissy agents...Obviously, the last 2 weeks will be the nuts and bolts...Another problem, just to reiterate from yesterday, by the time the Sixers get to work out the players they're REALLY intersted in, the young men will be half beaten like a rented mule (they're averaging 4-5 cities a week)....Makes one think a little that rumor about the #15 pick getting dealt may not be so far fetched...Or maybe it's just DC playing some mind games, bringing in tired prospects at the end of the grind to see who plays tough late in the 4rth quarter.

@mt airy, I have been professing my desire for Ross the last couple weeks. The guy is a player we need.

@bgwile, Maybe they don't resign Meeks or Low Will if he comes in. Remember, we don't have very much under contract for next season.

@bears, IMO, Ross sends Turner back to the second Unit of Iggy is still here come next season. If Ross is the player I think he is, then he starts at the 2 because he can score, shoot, is long and doesn't need the ball.

Bears I think you playing on top of combocancer's shoulders would be a Meeks upgrade....in both comedy and basketball play

@bearsfriend & ericthered, the people complaining about choosing Ross, either want a big or don't want another Iggy/ET type player. What they don't understand is we can still get a big in other ways, most of the bigs projected to be around at 15 are 2 yr projects. As for not wanting another ET/Iggy type, Ross is not them. He replaces Jodie Meeks. Even if he's inconsistent at first he can shoot as well as Meeks and brings other things like length, finishing on the break and rebounding. Everyone wanted Jodie out of the rotation, drafting Ross will essentially do that. He is not the piece that guarantees a championship but he is an upgrade and provides something this team desperately needs.

Young players like Quincy Miller can get lost on a team like Baylor with a bunch of selfish minded players focused mainly on getting to the NBA. I think he's a diamond in the rough and a good pick at #15. Smart player, shot blocker & rebounder. Willing to go inside.
