Sixers agree to terms with Royal Ivey
Guard Royal Ivey has returned to the Sixers, coach Doug Collins told reporters today.
The 6-4 Ivey played in 71 games with the Sixers in 2008-09, averaging 3 points per game in 12.1 minutes as a reserve. Ivey appeared in 26 games the following season before he was traded to Milwaukee in the deal that brought Jodie Meeks.
He spent the last two seasons with Oklahoma City, playing in 25 games two years ago and 34 games last season. He also appeared in five playoff games as the Thunder reached the NBA Finals this past season.
In eight seasons out of the University of Texas, Ivey, 31, has averaged 3.4 points, 1.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists.
Collins also announced that Kwame Brown passed his physical. The 30-year-old center will be joining his seventh NBA team since being selected with the No. 1 overall pick out of high school in 2001.
There goes my NBA league pass. ssaun
How disappointing. I get why DC signed him, tall, good defender, and a good locker room guy. But where's the upside? He's 31. I believe the bottom of the roster should be filled with young player with upside. With the hope we hit on one. I'd rather lose with the feeling it was because we were young and can get bettervs we played our best and just suck. The FO should realize that fans will come if there is hope and progress towards a goal of a championship someday. I'd much rather see Hassan Whiteside suck than Kwame Brown suck.
I've just about lost interest. Wake me up next offseason. xam14
I checked the website and his jersey isn't available. Don't keep us waiting bababooey2yall
Another solid Doug Collins move. Looks like we're stuck with Iggy though...hopefully a team will bite on the Olympic hype. tomficara
xam14:XACTLY: I believe when DC came out of June 28th with two #1's in Harkless and Moultrie, he more or less labeled them "young and athletic" and he got the "upside bug" out of his system...I do feel in his quest for "pieces", he really thinks he can win with this piecemeal cast. The fear factor to me is just not there...DC continues to surround himself with veterans that simply don't float a boat. bearsfriend
Shaler Halimon is in contract talks as we speak. watsonmr
yeah the sixers should fill their final few spots with youth. a lot of undrafted guys have done well in summer leagues, so why not go after their potential? i think the sixers plan is to have the most ridiculous names in the nab: jrue, thaddeus, kwami, and now royal ivey HDemetriou
Winning a few more games and eaking into the playoff should not be the goal. Lose a few more and is a better alternative. I dont thinlk it will make a differnece to frees agents.
I listened to Thorn on WIP this am, and no mention of Vucevic. Its like he's not in the team anymore. Could he be the center they move, with Thad's big contrat? I still think a trade is coming. At least I hooe so. xam14
I don't get what this team is doing. We are collecting short-term and expiring contracts and getting "longer" and more "athletic" in the process. No significant moves in terms of FA's and we are being told this is all a plan for the 2013-2014 class of free agents. Fine. Believe that if you want. The problem is that the NBA favors a handful of "elites" - Celtics, Lakers, Spurs, Bulls, Heat, Thunder (this is the recent addition) and if Stern had his way the Knicks would also be relevant. What does that mean for the rest of us that follow another team? We are SOL. I have been a Sixers fan since Julius Erving. I still have my Doctor's last House Call scrubs from his last game in Indianapolis. I loved the Collins hire and I am glad they finally have an owner who at least appears to want to spend money. The problem is this team looks like it will win fewer than half of its games as presently constructed. As such it will be a tough sell to get any of the big-time FA's to sign here next year. I want to be optimistic but the way the league is run now coupled with some of these moves make me think the Sixers will continue to be irrelevant. coloradoeagle
Why don't they just resign Allen Iverson? drtyhrry
I can't believe there are 5 pages of comments on this move. Ssteve115
WOW! 86 comments already on the signing of the 13th man; Harris and Aron have found a way to get the fan base excited. What's that? Most of them are confused and angry, wondering if there really is or ever was a plan for this off-season other than Collins doing color work on the Olympics! The Ivey signing is what it is: a back up veteran point guard who can defend, but the 13th man is NEVER a locker room leader, so forget that idea. For anyone who wants Doug Collins as General Manager, he clearly engineered the trade for Hawes, who now is going to be turned into a power forward, he clearly pushed for getting rid of Speights for two useless second round picks, although one wonders whether he wanted Sam Young at the trade dealine, he clearly pushed for signing Kwame Brown and Royal Ivey, getting rid of the player, Meeks, for whom he traded Ivey, he clearly pushed for drafting Vucevic who is now a Soviet style non-person, and he pushed for drafting Harkless and Moultrie, who better darn well turn out to be serious ballers. The one plus was the drafting of Lavoy Allen. To be honest, I am completely mystified by this off-season and I do not believe their line that all will be well in 2013. Thorn will be gone this year for sure, Collins most likely will quit after this season, and then Harris and Aron will sell the team, and a disillusioned and dwindling fan base will not care. chuckw
Of course the NBA wants the Knicks and Lakers to do well. They are the two biggest markets in the US. However, Knicks management is as brutal as the 76ers. The NBA cannot control the poor management decisions that a team makes. Somehow, Danny Ainge, Mitch Kupchak and Pat Reilly figure out how to work within the salary cap and add superstars to their rosters. Kobe and Howard is just an updated version of Kobe and Shaq. The Lakers will do whatever they have to do; the 76ers won't. The Heat figured out how to add Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis to an already stacked team. Their management likes championships. Again, send a message to 76ers management by not spending your hard earned money on an organization not committed to bringing the fans a championship. It's been 29 years and will most certainly hit 30. syddan26
For some reason some of my comments aren't going through tonight.
Chuck: I have to agree with a lot of your points especially in regards to Vuc who was "Doug's guy" from before the draft. He fell in love with his basketball IQ and ability to knock down a shot, but what he couldn't see in his workouts was that the kid was uber soft and although he was 7 ft attacked the rim like he was 6 ft and seemed lost on defense. Whether or not Vuc turns a corner it seems very hard to get out of Coach Collins doghouse, just ask Mo Speights. I am really confused with the premise that Brown is your starting center and Hawes will somehow play the four, but I guess this is what the team did a lot of the times with Brand and Hawes. I am not as much of a Brown hater as some as I did watch him play a bunch the last couple years and he does play physical and will give the team some size and toughness.
Bears: Hear your point about Faried and there are a bunch of guys who are lighting up summer league including Terrence Jones. This years draft class is impressing in summer league and it seems like there are some definite players. I was away from the board for a few days and am wondering why there wasn't more of an uproar or mention in the press about Lavoy's pathetic performance in Orlando and the fact he was so out of shape. I hope the money hasn't gotten to the kid, but he played with no sense of urgency almost as if it to say I already proved my value. What he should have been doing is showing the front office and coaching staff that the power forward job should be his. Really disappointing and I hope he gets in shape this summer. Mattb
