Report: Sixers in talks about Iguodala trade

POSTED: Thursday, August 9, 2012, 1:28 PM
Will Andrew Bynum, Andre Iguodala, and Dwight Howard all be moved as part of the same trade? (AP Photos)

The 76ers are involved in talks that could send Andre Iguodala to the Nuggets as part of a four-team blockbuster trade, according to Yahoo! Sports.

The website reports that sources say the deal would send Orlando’s Dwight Howard and Denver forward Al Harrington to the Lakers, Lakers center Andrew Bynum to the Sixers, and Lakers forward Pau Gasol and Denver guard Arron Affalo going to Orlando.

Talks have grown serious “over the course of the week,” according to the report, but a deal is not considered imminent. Yahoo! also said there are moving parts to the deal to be resolved.

Yahoo! said the Magic would have a better chance of moving Gasol in another deal and eliminate the risk of Bynum leaving as a free agent in 2013. In one of the scenarios, either Gasol or Bynum would come to the Sixers.

This could end up being the best way to maximize Iguodala's value, but don't expect anything to happen until all of these pieces come out of the olympics healthy enough to be ready for the next season. Iggy would make the Nuggets ludicrously athletic.

Then what do the Sixers do for leadership once Iggy is gone? Sad....

They need a big man and Iggy is expendable, but is Bynum that guy? He never stays healthy and his contract is up after this year.

Most big men in the league are injury prone. It just goes with the territory. The fact that you also have Hawes and Brown on the roster helps alleviate that burden.

Bynum over Pau please. Bynum will if pushed the best center in the NBA ...eventually. Gasol is old now and looks it as he plays.

Thetechnician- please tell me that's sarcasm right? as if anyone but doug was really leading this team. honestly have no expectations of this going through but if it does it will literally be the best move this franchise made since 82 when they brought in mo.

@RG: It may be ideal that Bynum's contract runs out. If it goes really well, we may have a chance to keep him because we'll have cap space and he'll be comfortable here. If it falls apart, it's just more money off the books to build a more cap-flexible future for the Sixers.

Do you know if they'd have cap space left over if they resigned Bynum and let some of the role players walk?

I'd think a Bynum-Holiday-Turner-Young core could conceivably convince another top tier guy to sign here.

I'm not enough of a capologist to know if they would have cap space left over, especially since they also have to give Holiday a new contract soon and rumors are he want to get paid big time. But they would at least have the young pieces to make a trade for a disgruntled star somewhere if that star ends up wanting to come to Philly.

Not really - they'd probably have to find somebody desperate for some big man help and move either Hawes (maybe) or Brown (doubtful) for expiring contracts. They've got about $11M coming off at the end of this season (Young, Wright & Ivey), but with the escalators in the rookie deals and Thad's deal, that # is closer to $8.5/9M. Bynum's salary wouldn't go down significantly if you re-signed him, so you'd really only have about $8.5M to play with, and you're also staring at Jrue's final year of his rookie contract next season.

Bynam for Iggy sounds too good to be true. I'm sure the Sixers would also have to part with a couple #1 picks that would go to Orlando. Then Bynam walks after one year? Hmmmm.....where is Bear and Chuck to clue me on this?

I would say it's more of a Gasol for Iggy, Bynum for Howard...except the Magic aren't as interested in Bynum because they would want him to commit long term. Gasol for Iggy is a much more balanced deal, and the role players from Denver would even out the trade....wouldn't be shocked if we ended up throwing in Vuc or somebody similar though.
