Minor move by Sixers at trade deadline

Sixers acquire Charles Jenkins from Golden State Warriors for second round pick

Minor move by Sixers at trade deadline

POSTED: Thursday, February 21, 2013, 4:58 PM

The Big Move that the 76ers made during the summer – remember that one – is the one they are apparently sticking with (or stuck with) at least for the time being.

The NBA trade deadline came and went Thursday afternoon and with the exception of giving up a second round pick to the Golden State Warrriors for backup combo guard Charles Jenkins, all was quiet. Though Evan Turner’s name was apparently brought up to and by general manager Tony DiLeo, the third-year swingman is still here, as is everyone else on the roster, including Andrew Bynum.

The offseason move that brought Andrew Bynum and sent away Andre Iguodala, Nikola Vucevic, Moe Harkless and a draft pick apparently is still the deal the Sixers are banking their future, at least somewhat. Bynum, of course, has yet to slip on a Sixers uniform due to his aching knees. Which means after the season the team will have to make the decision whether to let him loose (thus having paid more than $16 million for, basically, a distraction) or sign him to some kind of a deal with the hopes he can return to his form of a year ago when he averaged 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds for the Los Angeles Lakers.

So at 22-30 and playoff chances fading like the possibility of Bynum suiting up, the Sixers will stand pat with what they have now, with the addition of Jenkins.

The 6-3 Jenkins started 28 of the 51 games he played for the Warriors his rookie season, averaging 5.8 points and 3.3 assists. In 47 games this season he averaged 1.7 points while getting just 6.2 minutes a contest, compared with 17.5 his rookie season.

Jenkins will basically be auditioning for a role with the team next year as they still try to find a true backup for All-Star Jrue Holiday. Along with Thaddeus Young, those are the only two with long-term contracts on the roster. So moves this summer should be plentiful. That is why Thursday’s trading deadline came and went so quietly.

Sixshots: The team had an optional practice but was not made available to the media Thursday…It will be quite a weekend for the Sixers as they host the defending champion Miami Heat on Saturday and travel to New York to play the Knicks on Sunday.

Interesting addition, as it comes just a day after Pargo gets paid for the rest of the season (?)...Jenkins is a bulldog, and on the ball defensive hawk that DC often cries about...This kid IS physical, is not a head case, and I've mentioned his name a few times earlier in the season as a potential fit, as the Sixers played musical chairs with backup PGs...Jenkins put up some stellar numbers over the closing weeks of a meaningless 2012 for the Warriors when Steph Curry went down for the count as a physical, albeit, not polished PG. He is actually an example of what the Sixers' depleted roster needs...blocked players (behind Curry and Jarrett Jack, this kid never got a shot) who can maybe provide quality when/if givent the opportunity (Enes Kanter/JaVale McGee next would've been nice)....Developmental area-this guy has ZERO range on the perimeter...Good,cheap pickup, expecially since DC obviously has little regard for 2cnd round picks (LaVoy notwithstanding)....To DelawarRiverRat,JBP, and KevWalton, thanks fo the kind words..Chuck, what's up with the Phillies?...Ho Hum-enjoyiung the Nuggets along with you, my man.

Dan: tried unsuccessfully to post the other night when DRR wondered what happened to you and I opined that: 1. you were working looong hours at Applebees; 2. you were freezing your tail off and probably lacking electricity for long periods; and 3. you were sick and tired of the Sixers and getting ready instead for the Phils. How close was I?
As for the Phils, I expect a terrific race in the East between the Braves, Nats and Phils, particularly if Ruff and Brown come up big and Michael Young can play at least an adequate third base, backed by Franzen. Obviously, they need Halladay, Utley, Howard, Adams, and Rollins to stay healthy. Interestingly, we have not had the usual interest from our compatriots who normally are part of our full season ticket contingent (for 27 years) for the first time in many seasons, put off by the continuing high prices ($132 a pair) and by their feeling that Amaro has not done enough to put them into contention. I must admit I am optimistic, but then everything looks better in the Spring.

Chuck, you're not quite ready to quit this gig and start out as a tarot reader, but you're really hot on the trail, so that's impressive...Point #1 is the biggest obstacle, but I am enjoying heckling fans every night a Celtics' game is on, although at least they made a sweet acquisition of stealing Jordan Crawford for Leandro Barbosa...Met Ron Hextall (GM of Manchester Monarchs, his date was hot for Valentine's Day, somewhat more deserving than a well run Applebee's), and bought a guy his dinner since he was wearing a Halladay jersey...As for the Sixers, just watching and reading daily, after the daily steam has left the commenters noses and ears...More interested in Royce White's NBDL debuts last week, where he has dropped serious dimes as a 270 lb "point power forward"...Watching the Rockets move in for Thomas Robinson, that's a team where the Sixers could pick up "quantity" of assets up front (T Jones, R White,D Montiejunas, and G Smith) where that team is CROWDED...Interesting move by the Bucks obtaining JJ Redick.

    @'bear' :

Welcome back oh ye of poorest putting. The shadow cast by the huge tent of the P.T. Bynum Travelling Cartilege Review and Carnival Act darkens everything around this team. Who knew that team propaganda would get more toxic when The Evil Empire sold their interest? Who could have predicted that? There's no indication Bynum wants to play here. If he does not re-sign, all that cap space is worthless because no 1st rate star will sign here. And then, what? Another batch of 5-year Elton Brand imprisonments?

Please send out a search party for JonKap.
    All the best.

Great to see your post Dan! Never heard of this guy, knew you would. Wish they made play for Ilyasova as I still see him as a fit even though he is having a rough year.

Thanks. Ilyasova's been really good now for the Bucks ever since Scott Skiles got his walking papers...That guy CAN stretch a defense, while still setting crunching screens, hitting the boards, and playing solid defense. In quite a few games, both Jennings and Ellis have gotten out of control playing for their contracts, so other guys don't always get into the offensive flow...The Nets have been rumored to be talking to the Bucks about Ersanity, but I too wish the Sixers DID have interest...he plays big, and would offer a true reason for Thad to be used as a 3 in certain rotations...This current Sixers' edition does not deserve to be watched. Real dreck.

This sucks. They got a guy who will just sit on a bench again and can't help this team make it to the playoffs. it is better if they didn't make a move at all.

Not true, as this guy plays fierce now for a team that displays little machismo on the court...He's simply an unheralded kid from NY (grew up in World B Free's Brownsville, which ain't Candyland) who played all 4 years at Hofstra, and will make you a fan...No shame for a 23 yr old behind Steph Curry (as pure a sniper as you'll see) and Jack, who J Giam correctly notes is the best backup PG in the League....Actually, the lack of moves simply reflects how porous this roster is at the moment (current climate), so more the reason to have fresh blood to watch...Do you really want to see more Kwame,Royal,Damien...more expiring snipers trying to find their way?..Bottomline, this bench stinks, and this guy may help.

Completely ridiculous! I USE TO HAVE, sold them last week. This team is a complete embarrassment. Signing players to 10 day contracts, trading for other teams benches while all this time the Sixers blow! I have no faith in this group to put a winning team on the court. Turner is a flop, Bynum was a huge mistake. Say what you want about "Financial Freedom" if they dont re-sign Bynum but Iggy played for this team, unlike this 7' piece of sh*t!I have NO FAITH this bunch would use that money to sign the right players. I WILL NOT drive almost 2 hours anymore to watch this god awful team. Remote in hand is my way for the foreseeable future

Setting aside the Bynum trade -- which I can't criticize because I was ecstatic at the time -- here is one man's ranking of Doug Collins' trade deadline and off-season moves in ascending order of earth-shattering importance:

5)Signing Dorell Wright (only because DC doesn't think he's important)
    4)Signing Jeremy Pargo
3)Trading for Charles Jenkins (Draft picks? Who needs draft picks?)
    2)Signing Swaggy P

And the winner is.....uh, um. I'm drawing a blank, guys. Oh, yeah!

    1) Handing Kwame Brown a two-year contract. Guess I forgot about him because DC forgot about Kwame shortly after annointing him the best defensive center to hit the league since Bill Russell.

Finally....the BEAR comes out of hibernation....that alone makes me want to chime in from time to time.

Can't lie I was kind of hoping that ET would be traded just so that we all could move on....including him....I'm a fan and I truly believe his best basketball is ahead of him but it won't happen with the 76ers and DC. I don't believe he will ever become a top 25 player but I do believe he's better than what we have seen.

Ice....you can criticize the Bynum trade because we as fans DO NOT have access to the 6 doctors reports the 76ers claim to have reviewed which in my opinion is BS.....they rolled the dice and crapped out and we will live with the fallout for years to come!

This is a Philly type guy and a good player. The Sixers need a lot of help, and this kid isn't the complete answer, but he's a real good add.
Everything hinges on management having the guts to admit Bynum didn't work, eat it, and move on. Signing this guy will just delay our progress further. It didn't work...move on!

tomficara:great points, and yes, the Sixers are still hinging to that "we haven't seen the finished product without AB" as their last card to the fanbase...after getting over the pure shock, and whether the reality is "Bynumgate" or simply "Ruland, Act 2"...moving on building assets thru crafty deals/quality signings to get relative (lol, a word used in DC's first season, proof that this situation has set them a few years) is the best course of action, as they now have several needs...Wondering if DC's ego (it is all about him, unfortunately) can accept your wise advice, or whether the once tickled pink young ownership gets up off their a__beating, and realizes they're not so much smarter than everyone else in the league as "capbeaters"...Still needing true separation from Coach and GM, as DC's true Czar qualities is in speaking to the microphone/media than building a balanced, winning roster.....bbrady-thanks,dude. The cave's still looking good right about now.
