Do you think a professional athlete is ever happy when his playing time has been trimmed? You don’t become an athlete at that level without having a fierce competitive nature.

Evan Turner, the 76ers second year swingman, is sort of in that position now. Heading into last night’s game against the Charlotte Bobcats, Turner had averaged just over 17 minutes in the previous three games. In the team’s blowout win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday, Turner played 22 minutes and 32 seconds, but that included 12 in the fourth quarter, when the game was already out of reach. Sort of meaningless minutes, they were.

“I don’t think that,” responded coach Doug Collins when asked if Turner is slumping right now. “I think what happens sometimes is we get caught with teams, and it’s hard for me to take Dre (Andre Iguodala) off the floor if he’s playing against one of the (opposition’s) key guys. A lot of times he gets matched up with a guy, and I want him to stay on that guy until the other coach rests (the key player) as well. And sometimes what ends up happening is Evan might not get in until the last minute or two of the third quarter or the last minute or two of the first quarter. Sometimes we get caught a little bit like that. I like Jodie out on the court with certain guys because he gives us a lot of space out on the floor and energy with his shooting. A lot of times it gets caught up like that, so I think it’s more of that than anything else.

“That’s what this season is all about. Everybody wants to play, everybody wants to get their minutes. I wouldn’t want anybody on my team that was happy sitting over there on the bench. I want them to all be out there. But there are certain nights where the minutes don’t get there. But the one thing I’ve learned is that you always manage ahead. If you manage behind you’re dealing with crisis. If you manage ahead you’re dealing with people before they get down like that. I’m always talking with our guys, whether via text or face-to-face. I understand the nuances of this game. I’ve been around it for 40 years. I don’t think there’s anything that’s going to surprise me.”

When asked about his cut-back minutes, Turner said: “There’s a recession, baby. We’re like the stock market with playing time.” Then more seriously, Turner said: “I don’t know. It’s just one of those situations, and we have to do what’s best for the team and certain situations coach tries to do what’s best out there, and that’s it.

“You just have to move on with each game. We have so many games coming up. It is how it is. You just have to be professional about it. You have to just be prepared. That’s pretty much what I took from Noc (teammate Andres Nocioni) - you’ve just got to be prepared when your number’s called. Last year it happened to him a few times, but he was always ready. That’s what you have to do.”

Positive attitude, but DC has to get ET some consistent playing time. He is the future and appears to be a good defender

Evan must grow up emotionally first and he will under Doug.

I like Turner, but you play your way into more time. No coach will refuse to play a player who contributes. He is averaging 24 minutes per game for the whole year and you want Iggy, Williams, Holiday, and Young on the floor at crunch time. So he is basically battling Meeks for whatever minutes are left. If he is going to play point forward, he has to turn the ball over less. He plays strong defense and rebounds his position well, if he keeps working, keeps a positive attitude, and stays ready he will get minutes as the season continues.

doug's jerking the kid around. it's a shame. he's not being consistent with what evan's role for the team is. turner was playing real good to start the season and it was exciting to see him start to come into his own as an nba player. ever since the orlando game it's been downhill in his confidence and playing time. who knows what's going on in the locker room, but the kid gets picked to play in the rising stars game and his minutes dropped to under 20/game. maybe it went to his head? and why has jodie's minutes skyrocketed to 25+? this is a conversation that has been going on for a while and doesn't seem likely to end. i'm sick of reading about the same thing, but it's truly baffling. doug's rotations/substitutions don't make sense sometimes. if a unit is not clicking, sometimes he sticks with hoping that they will figure it out; but, if a unit is working sometimes he'll pull guys from it, which makes no sense. is he trying to get ahead of the moment/possibility of that unit not working well together anymore?...damn it doug, just let turner play through some stupid plays. and cut meek's minutes in half for crying-out-loud.

Turned needs to improve his game, and then his playing time will come. 1) stop dribbling in place, make one move and go to the bucket. 2) improve that jumper. How can you be a SG/SF with such an ugly shot?

Sixers need to trade Iggy NOW! If you look at the recent boxscores his stats are terrible. Stop raving about his defense cause his man is scoring a lot of points and his turnovers are high. So afraid Collins will not give ET playing time at the expense of Iggy. Time for Thorn to make a GOOD trade!

stupid post. watch the game, dont just look at the box score. iguodala has been playing the top scorer on the other team night after night. if you took him out of the rotation and replaced his with turner, you would see a major drop off in defense. but since you cant see defense in the box core, you wouldnt know that, would you?

bill poore-you are an idiot. stop looking at the box score and watch the game. AI plays with heart and intensity each second he is out there and that doesn't show up on the box score. when he's on the floor, the team plays well-end of story

So, Iggy was your favorite player on the team when he was taking too many shots, trying to carry a bad team on his back and leading the team in scoring. But now that he is playing team ball, not forcing his shot, proving that he really does belong on the All-Star team, but he is no longer the leading scorer on the team, NOW you want to trade him?

Coach Collins is getting a lot from this team. Let him be the captain and move on.

NBA coaches are judged on Wins, bottom line. They are not judged on keeping players happy or developing young players at the expense of winning unless the team is hopelessly out of contention.
Players get their minutes by convincing the coach that the team has a better chance of winning with them on the floor. Apparently Collins doesn't think that's the case right now with Turner. Turner has to show him otherwise. Personally, I would rather see ET get more minutes then Meeks.
