Sixers center Andrew Bynum will be held out of basketball activity for three weeks because of his offseason knee procedure, the team announced on Monday.
The Sixers said Bynum was being held out as a precaution. The Sixers said Bynum had been diagnosed with a bone bruise of the medial femoral chondyle of his right knee.
The Sixers also announed that they have acquired 7-foot veteran center Mikki Moore.
Bynum was the Sixers' big offseason acquistion this summer. In August, the Sixers traded Andre Iguodala to Denver as part of a four-team trade. The Sixers landed Bynum and Jason Richardson while Dwight Howard went to the Lakers.
More details to come. Check back with Sixerville.
I'm disappointed because I wanted to see Bynum in the pre-season due to my own impatience. I also wanted to hear regular updates about how the team looks with him in the line-up. However, it may be better for the team that they have three weeks to figure out more pressing concerns. I mean, with Bynum in the game, things are pretty darn simple. Bynum to the block, Bynum calls for ball, player throws ball to Bynum. Three players wait to see if he passes it to them. One player times a cut/crash of the glass. Get back on 'D'. The Sixers may win more games this year, but Collins certainly has the option to keep things very very simple with great effectiveness. Our team may be a tad dull style-wise, but winning is worth it. The main effect of Bynum's absence during camp is that it frees up valuable minutes for the coaching staff to evaluate the other players and clear up some major logjams. With guys like Richardson, Wright, N. Young and T. Young competing for about 80 minutes of playing time, the coaching staff has its work cut out for it. Also, if Moultrie is ready to play, we need to evaluate him. He brings some unique characteristics to the team and the coaches have to decide if he deserves court time. He is long and springy and he might be an excellent defender of stretch-fours. I hope his ankle is ok, because the coaches should be taking a very long hard look at him this camp. Bynum's out. That stinks. But there may be a silver lining. I am pretty sure the bone bruise and the procedure he did in Germany are totally independent events, btw. I wonder if he bumped knees with somebody during a pick-up game. incog69
Bear, I side with you. This procedure should NOT cause a significant bone bruise. Sixers adding Dan and Mikki to camp probably means that they know Bynum will be out for at least 3 weeks. That being said, this team is not coming together until the second half no matter what. JBP- I`m a newbie from Cal,Bynum viewer. In an interview he said it was not caused by the injections, but didn`t mention a fall or blow either. In any case, I noticed a diffrence in his body. Last year he started boxing, and came to camp lean and ripped. This year he seems to be Shaq-lite,maybe trying for the power game. Going for the max contract, he has every reason to put out his best effort.

If you want to know why this doesn't matter, then read PENNCROW19's comment above - there's no need for me to steal the thunder here, PENNCROW19 sums it up right. IGGLES1980- It doesn't answer a thing...Everyone knows AB discussed this procedure with Kobe. The POINT is, these exhibitions ARE NOT worthless, and having a minimum of 7 new players meshing with the (also new) anchor should ideally take place BEFORE the season begins if you can control it...In a system predicated on precision and communication, team chemistry will lag some, even with Bynum up to speed athletically in three weeks...It's not just Bynum, who I'm not worried about one bit...It's the surrounding cast learning where the big guy likes the ball, how he times his screens, where he likes penetrators to go, where he'll look first to outlet a pass, where he likes his alley oop pass...glad you're so comfortable.
bearsfriend - dude, you need to relax. it's not that it "doesn't matter", but you are completely overreacting and acting like bynum missing 3 weeks of PRESEASON is the end of the world. anyone who's played basketball knows that it doesn't take long to learn how to play with another guy. where he likes his alley-oop passes? what the hell does that mean? he likes his alley-oop passes right next to the rim, the only place anyone who knows b-ball would put it. if this time table is correct, they will have plenty of time to get comfortable. and there are 82 games in the season. relax, chief.
Somebody please explain to me how this "doesn't matter"...While it's predictable to for the club to side on precaution with such a valuable asset, wasn't October for DC supposed to be the time to put the pieces together? Missing all 5 exhibition games and over a week of practices can't bode well for team chemistry and different players learning to play off of AB...Does DC still use Hawes as that "stretch 4" during his camp?.. Did the Sixers KNOW an appointment in the second week of September for this non evasive procedure would take AB out of the "crossword puzzle" process?..Any Laker fans out there, please chime in on Kobe's post procedure recovery time when he had it done...On the flip side, AB will be hungrier than ever to get it going, having been running for just a week in practice prior to the Nuggets, so fans on opening night get to see AB's first action in a game scenario. bearsfriend- Excuse me, non "invasive" procedure.

fy, after reading up it makes sense now... appears the bruise was caused by the treatment itself. Makes sense they gotta let that heal now. phillyPeteZ
Behind the 8ball?? Dude will know all the plays and participate and walk throughs the season starts at the end of october add 3 weeks to today and he'll be practicing the week before the season starts we'll be cool fam... And the doctor told him to get the procedure done in late september so it can carry over to the season salis15
Also the physician suggested the procedure get done in September so it would have a better effect on his knees for the season. Nothing to see here, it's pre-season.. Don't need Bynum getting hurt by scrubs trying to make a name for themselves. Facts before ignorance- Respectfully disagree...Bynum himself has said he's dissapointed (although star athletes missing huge chunks of camp is NOT uncommon, in all sports), and one has to believe DC is not thrilled, for chemistry reasons...If it was a situation like last year (limited camp, team basically the same from the year before), then I would concur, but 2012-13 is all about a new identity with so many new pieces.

Is this the same procedure as the one that Kobe got in Germany? If so, then it is not really news because Bynum said he was going to do this when they traded for him. Which means everything is still going as planned. penncrow19
Pre season games. nothing else He will play when the games count! Let Mikki Moore play those worthless games. jolida
Maybe you're being Silli but when did the term "good season" and "Mikki More" ever coincide?? Facts before ignorance
Not a good start dude. When I first heard about his knee procedure I knew he would not be ready for training camp. Bynum should have had this procedure done in July. He really needs to be in training camp with all the new faces and new offense. Now we start the season behind the eight ball. PhillyBoy-in-Charlotte- Mikki Moore? He had one good season that I can remember. Can he still bring it?
- Dude's been around (this would make his 10th team, and has played for a few of them twice)...Purely a body who bangs. Hope he doesn't hurt anybody.
