Source: Bynum coming to Sixers, Iguodala gone

POSTED: Thursday, August 9, 2012, 10:22 PM
The Sixers have dealt Andre Iguodala and will receive Andrew Bynum in a four-team trade. (AP Photos)

Were the 76ers smart in trading Andre Iguodala, Nik Vucevic and Maurice Harkless in order to acquire Andrew Bynum and Jason Richardson?
Yes. The Sixers got a great deal for what they gave up.
No. The team could have acquired better players.

According to a league source, the big man the Sixers have long coveted will be arriving in town via trade Friday morning.

The source confirmed to the Daily News that the reported deal that will bring Los Angeles Lakers 7-0, 285-pound center Andrew Bynum to the Sixers will be announced at a press conference Friday morning.

A source with direct knowledge of the talks told ESPN.com that the Denver Nuggets will get Sixers All-Star Andre Iguodala, the Lakers will receive Dwight Howard, the 76ers will get Bynum and Orlando’s Jason Richardson, and the Magic will get Denver’s Arron Afflalo, and Al Harrington, the Sixers’ Nikola Vucevic and one protected future first-round pick from each of the other three teams.

In addition, the Magic will be getting other pieces, including the 76ers’ No. 1 draft pick, Moe Harkless, a source told ESPN.

Lakers forward Pau Gasol had been in and out of talks, sources told ESPN.

Should the deal go through, it will be quite a coup for 76ers president Rod Thorn. When asked how the team can become a possible contender for a championship, three words usually weren’t too far from coming out of his mouth: “Dominant big man.”

Coach Doug Collins has commented on how nice it would be to have that hulking force in the post.

That force appears to be on the way.

Bynum, who will turn 25 in October, entered the NBA draft after his senior year in high school at Saint Joseph’s High School in Metuchen, N.J., and was selected by the Lakers with the 10th overall pick in 2005. In his seven seasons with L.A., Bynum, who grew up in Plainsboro, N.J.,  averaged 11.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.6 blocks. Last season, his best in the league, Bynum went for 18.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, 1.9 blocks and shot 55.8 percent from the floor in 35.2 minutes per game. He missed just six games, the fewest since his second year in the league. He has been dogged about his leadership and maturity issues and has been hampered by injuries throughout his career. He has missed 130 of the Lakers’ 394  regular-season games, mostly due to separate knee injuries.

Iguodala is currently a helping hand on an Olympic team that seems headed to winning the gold medal in London. This past season, Iguodala was an All-Star for the first time and earned the unending praise of Collins for his defensive prowess and overall game that produced 12.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.5 assists.

Iguodala, 28, has spent all eight of his NBA seasons with the Sixers after being taken with the ninth pick in the 2004 draft. The durable Iguodala has been struggling with nagging injuries over the past couple of seasons, with tendinitis in both knees and a recurring Achilles’ strain.

In Bynum, the Sixers will be adding a possible expiring contract. Bynum is scheduled to make close to $16.5 million this coming season. Iguodala will make $14.7 million and has a player-option deal to make $15.9 million with the Sixers the next season.

Nice trade, now let's make a deal for Thad Young and Hawes for a true power forward !!!!

Cheers to Iggy getting a fresh start elsewhere coming off the Olympics. Always liked him but he needed a new scene. Love all the moves this offseason. Only a little worried about not resigning Bynum and losing Harkless, who admittedly I'd never heard of before the Sixers drafted him. I guess if Bynum gets injured or fails to mesh this year, Sixers can trade him at the deadline or gain tons of cap space they can use to sign whoever's available next summer. Can't wait to see how Jrue, ET, Thad, and Bynum look out on the floor. A little worried about defense but the Sixers still have a very good defensive coordinator in Michael Curry. Excited in August -- rare for a Sixers fan.

I'll miss Iggy too a little bit, but he was a bad fit for this team. The Sixers need scoring, rebounding, basically a big presence in the middle, and Iggy couldn't provide that. So this trade had to happen and is a great move for the Sixers.

Positive step, but those heralding the Sixers as Atlantic champs need to take a breath. They still have a lot of work to do, as the team is terribly imbalanced. J Rich makes either or both Nick Young and Dorell Wright redundant -- three guys who do pretty much the same exact thing. Kwame signing now seems like a waste of time and money...if it wasn't before. Hawes as a starting 4? Far from a sure thing, especially defensively...can he run with the likes of Amare and Humphries? How does Thad fit in? And still no legit back-up for Holiday - sorry Wayns. Again, a hard move not to like, but this team is in no way a finished product that will contend for a title.

Still stunned: Sixers traded Vucevic, who was buried in DC's doghouse and would probably see little playing time, Harkless, who was rumored to be ticketed to the D League to work on his game and get back into shape after his injury; Iguodala, their best on-ball defender but whose time had come to be moved; and a protected first round draft pick (the second such pick to be moved thanks to the Moultrie deal) in return for a 24-year-old All-Star center with an edge and a 31-year old 6:6 quality shooting guard. Sixers just went from a likely 38-win season to a potential 50-win season. They are loaded!

can not be more happy about this trade. The Iguodala Era ran its' course. It was time to move on. Now it's time to give the key to Evan Turner and let him run this team.

I think this is a good move for everybody (ONLY if Orlando can convert one of their picks into a decent player).

Lakers get a legitimate shot & getting past the Thunder. orlando gets picks & freedom from the Howard soap opera. Sixers get a center. Denver (the bit player here) gets some very needed D.

Simply cannot knock the sixers for swinging for the fences here. I am excited about this move! I do see a hole in their on floor leadership that will need time to develop, so it could be an iffy start to the season but the potential is now there.

The Sixers will regret giving up Vucevic and Harkless down the road for a rental. It's doubtful the team will function well as a unit with all the new pieces sufficiently to win it all in 2013. Iggy was glue that made them a very good defensive team with a strong transition game. Denver has a better chance to win it all now that Iggy will guide all those young players like he did for the sixers. The SIXERS will be much weaker in 2014 if Bynum is not extended into the future. Bynum won't be the leader Iggy is. The good news is they have a much better front court than 2012.
Turner now has the opportunity to be the face of this franchise.

Bynum had a player fall into his knee which caused one of his injuries. Often injured? dude got hurt by a fluke accident on the court. He is the best center in the East just that quick with Howard going west. Go Sixers!

I'm not so worried about Bynum being injury-prone. So is Kwame & Hawes but we still have Lavoy and Moultrie backing up those 3. Wonder if the 76ers are going to make any other moves. They could trade for more pieces now how the Celtics did when aquiring Ray Allen and Garnett. Lots of potential lineups (starters and bench) still. Only sure starters I see are Jrue at PG and Bynum at C. Everything else is up in the air. SG - Turner-Richardson-Nick Young, SF - Wright-Thad-Turner, PF - Lavoy-Thad-Hawes-Moultrie.

Wow, the best (offensive) center in the league and outstanding perimeter shooting to go along with him. Should still be a top defensive team. we lose a little bit of perimeter D but pick up major rebounding and shot blocking.

Wow, Bynum in Philadelphia. This is significant. We keep our back court and we still have one of our first round rookies. It will be interesting to see what the Sixers roster looks like after the trade. We lose 3 players, They should have sent away Kwame Brown. All in all this will make the Sixers a better team.

Doug has always looked at how the Celtics built their team and this is exactly what the Sixers have done. You traded Iguodala and two young players who may have upside for a legitimate star big just like the Celtics did for KG. The one difference is the Celtics still had Paul Pierce as the veteran star to play with KG, Allen and the young guard in Rondo. A lot will be riding on Evan Turner and Thaddeus Young unless they still have another deal up their sleeve. You know have your young pg for the next 10 years and hopefully your center.

Bynum And Richardson? - Wow - the Sixers will actually be worth watching for the first time in years - and I can't wait to draft my fantasy team - only drawback is, like Brand - Bynum gets hurt a lot - so hopefully he can stay healthy for the season.

Iguodala for Bynum straight up is a good trade because Bynum has an expiring contract, but adding Vucevic and Harkless to the deal is ridiculous. Harkless is supposed to be a future star. Morgaging the 76ers future to satisfy the win-now mentality of the 76ers always impatient season ticket holders is why this team has remained consistently mediocre for more than 10 years.

I'm shocked....all the doubt, all the questions...ANSWERED...bye bye Iggy, hello hope....I'm giddy...we now have 3 guards (J Rich, N. Young, D Wirhgt) who are legit 3 pt threats and we have the big (Bynum) to draw the double to give it to them....we got a ton of size, a coach with a clue , and some nice depth. Its really hard to believe...Thad will actually get to start at his natural 3 (or ET at 3, Thad on bench and start J Rich)..ton of options. Making Hawes a 4 aint so bad with Bynum clogging the middle.
I give the Heat the edge still, but everyone else, be on alert.

This sounds way too good to be true. If it does happen, then I will be a born-again Sixers fan. Igoudala should have been traded two years ago for some used basketball shoes. For a player whose contract is ridiculous (lol), the dude has absolutely no offensive game whatsoever, and for being a Sixers' co-captain, has always choked and failed to lead his team over the second-round hump during the playoffs. Now, Bynum's o-game may not be that much better, but hey, he's worth the ridiculous contract that he's getting because of his size and rebounding ability.

KBryant thinks Phil Jackson is a conniving, cowardly, manipulative headcase. Ditto Shaq. Ditto Jordan. Bynum, whether he agrees or not, certainly has seen that part of Jackson. In Collins, he will get the exact opposite - the anti-Jackson - so on that basis alone, there is every reason for hope.

Iggy was a great defensive player, but let's not get out of hand here. He will never be as good as Bynum, who is also younger and plays a premium position. Holliday, Turner, N. Young, Thad and Bynum!!!!! D. Wright, Lavoy Allen, Richardson, Hawes and Moultrie on bench. Could use another guard, but this is a good team.

Why is this trade being reported as "completed" when it goes on to say that it won't be completed until at least Friday? Doesn't Cooney wait for confirmation before he reports trades as completed? Just sayin ....

I can't believe this has happened. Someone needs to take the temperature of Denvers management, they must be running a fever! Great day for Sixers fans!

I thought they would sneak in and get Howard ... but I'll take this ... sure hope the guy doesn't flake out

A power move. Thorn, you went out with a bang. Let's see. Turner, Holiday, Young, Hawes, Bynum. I like our chances against anybody in a playoff series. I also have to think that they know something else, we don't. They gave up a lot with Iggy, Vucevic and Harkless, can't think they would do that plus a protected future 1st rd pick for a 1 yr lease on Bynum

This is a very good trade. Especially if they can resign Bynum next year (if not they get his cap space free). JRich only makes 6 mil a year and is a very good shooter from the outside, which they lack.

Your details are way off here. Gasol is not in the trade. The Sixers are getting Bynum and Jason Richardson. They are trading Iggy, Vucevic, Moe Harkless and a first-round draft pick. Vucevic and Harkless are going to Orlando. Harrington is also going to Orlando, not LA. Orlando is getting first-round picks from Philly, LA and Denver along with Afflalo.

O...MY...GOD! It's about DOWN! Sixers fans prayers have been answered, I will miss Igoudala as he was my favorite Sixer but this trade was the best possible deal the sixers could have gotten for Andre and i'm glad the sixers pulled the trigger. This is Evan's and Bynum's team now. Go Sixers!!

Big move, this has to make them the favorites to win the Atlantic. Hopefully they can get him to re-up, gives them a great young core.

My apologies to Stephen A.Smith for doubting his prediction that a deal would be finished by tomorrow. ESPN has confirmed that the Sixers get Bynum and Jason Richardson, lose Iguodala, Harkless, Vucevic and a protected first round pick. Are you kidding me? Wow!
