Another name added to Sixers' list
Bob Cooney
The 76ers will interview their seventh candidate for the vacant coaching position tomorrow.
A source told the Daily News that Houston Rockets assistant Elston Turner will come to Philadelphia to discuss the vacancy. In the previous six meetings with potential coaches, president and general manager Ed Stefanski, assistant GM Tony DiLeo and team consultant Gene Shue have conducted the interviews.
Turner has been a longtime assistant in the NBA. He just finished his third season with the Rockets, and before that spent six seasons with the Sacramento Kings and four years with the Portland Trail Blazers.
Turner played eight seasons in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets and Chicago Bulls. He was drafted out of Mississippi in the second round of the 1981 draft by the Mavericks.
Turner joins a candidate list that includes former coach and current TNT analyst Doug Collins, former coach and ESPN analyst Avery Johnson, former Tronto Raptors coach Sam Mithcell, Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Bill Laimbeer, Phoenix Suns assistant Dan Majerle and Portland assistant Monty Williams.
More in tomorrow's Daily News.
- Huh?
- Doug Collins is a NO-BRAINER!!! My vote is to Doug Collins
While I am confident this coaching search was better than last year's, and better than the 2003 search done by Billy King that netted us Randy Ayers, a decision should be reached pretty soon. Maybe John Smallwood should be helping Stefanski, instead of DiLeo and Shue. 76erfn
Thank you! Finally! Been hoping that would Happen! Strong potential coach candidate! rswknight- Please hire Doug Collins. He's the BEST fit for Philly. I mean Avery Johnson is a better coach but do you really think he's going to give up coaching for his Hometown ? C'mon now he has ties to New Orleans and Doug Collins has the BRAINS and knowlege of the game. So I'm going with what I say. I favor the Sixers to hire Doug Collins as the Head Coach. Even the NBA Coach mock Draft says so. SO HIRE DOUG COLLINS!!!!
Comment removed.
DOUG COLLINS...No Brainer!?!? What has this guy ever won? Yeah he played here, but he's coached in three different cities, and hasn't won ANYTHING!!! Ok he has a winning record, but another recycled coach won't put fans in the seats/Sixers in the playoffs. On top of that, he cited the main reason he quit on the Wizards as...burnout. So you're telling me seven years later/OLDER, burnout won't be an issue...GIMME A BREAK!! Let him keep working for TNT!!! UseYourBrain

This Turner guy may be a quality candidate. I don't know. Regardless, why is Stefanski running this search?!?!? Wake up Ed and give a second or two of thought to the Sixers cause the Flyers aren't playing tonight and make something happen. davekrieg
this is the nba, it doesn't matter who you get to coach if you have no players. this team has no talent and won't for a long time because of the terrible contracts given to mediocre players like iguadala brand and dalembert mortonmic1
mortonmic1 said it all. JonKap- Throw my name into the mix.
