Agent: Kwame Brown to sign with Sixers; Silas has concussion

POSTED: Friday, July 13, 2012, 1:57 PM
The Sixers have signed center Kwame Brown to a two-year deal worth $6M. (AP Photo)

Kwame Brown's agent said Friday that the center has agreed to sign with the Sixers. Brown, who played for Sixers coach Doug Collins in Washington, would fill the Sixers' big-man void.

The agent, Mark Bartelstein, also told Yahoo Sports that the deal was for two years and $6 million.

Brown, 30, averaged 6.3 points and 6.3 rebounds  in 22.4 minutes last season for Golden State. He has averaged 6.8 points and 5.6 rebounds in his 11-year NBA career.

He was drafted first overall by Washington in 2001. He has played for Washington, the Los Angeles Lakers, Memphis, Detroit, Charlotte and Golden State.

The Sixers announced the re-signing of center Spencer Hawes. The team did not disclose the terms of the contract. Hawes has played 118 games (110 starts) and averaged 8.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.01 blocks in 22.4 minutes. He shot 47.4 percent from the floor.

In other Sixers news, Xavier Silas was injured at the team's final summer league game in Orlando on Friday. The initial reports indicate that the team is concerned that injury could be a skull fracture. Silas has been sent to an Orlando hospital. The Sixers announced that Silas suffered a concussion and possible frontal bone skull fracture.

Also, Yahoo reported that Elton Brand has been picked up off amnesty waivers by the Dallas Mavericks. The Sixers used their amnesty clause on Brand last week.

He looks good in the layup line...Funny thing, during today's Rookie game vs the Pistons, the cameras zoomed in on DC and Rod actually sharing a chuckle. It was about 20 minutes before this deal went down...They're not done though..DC's playing mad scientist..A trade's a coming...down the line.

My concern about this signing isn't just the lack of talent, but I've read interviews with him where he states that he is a really good player (which he isn't). He's more than a little delusional. I'm amazed he came here, because when he came to the league and was mentally and emotionally destroyed by Jordan, who was his coach? Doug Collins, who just let it happen. I'm not expecting anything out of this signing, but then again, we don't have a Billy King or Ed Steffanski to sign him to a big multiyear contract, so that's good at least.

Troy Murphy and Anthony Randolph are sitting out there for free! Why Kwame?

Its not like he is a 5-6 year player. He has been in the league for 11 years. Does anyone expect Brown to learn new tricks? Also, why 2yrs? This spot could've given to a younger player with an upside at a much cheaper price. People say this is a low risk high reward move. But I don't see the possible "high reward" at all. Strange move.

After a series of shrewd, thoughtful, culture- and future-building moves...this? Two years? Two years of a 7-foot, 270 pound player who was on the floor for nearly 200 minutes last season and didn't block a SINGLE shot? If Doug Collins gets this guy to play to even half his potential (something Phil Jackson couldn't do), he should win coach of the year...no, coach of the century. This is waste of $6 million very valuable dollars. Hate this move. Hate it.

MJ originaly drafted him for the Wiz and he really tore into him.It was Dougs 1st yr as coach of the Wiz.At least he will block the paint and hopefully get some boards. DC must see something and thinks he can improve him.

Also it is part of the bridge to the next year.

Kwame Brown has a respectable FG%. I can't say much else about him other than he is used to playing the same avg. MPG that he would likely get here. There is a bit of a personal story that could work out in the teams favor as well. It's easy to consider that kind of thing with a low risk, reasonably inexpensive signing. He promised he would make Doug Collins proud, in '01 I believe. He was clearly not mature enough to hold up his end of the bargain. Collins seems like the kind of coach that will be willing to give him another chance to make good on his promise. At 6'11",270, he is a legitimate big man. It's up to him to play like one. His other stats are way too low to convince any of us that the Sixers have answered the call for a man that can bang down low unless he is receptive to Collins coaching and the Sixers culture of strong defense. I'm ready to watch him play and keep an open mind. The team is in need of a #5 that can lay a little hurt on a showboat once in a while. I still have visions of Wade's dunk at the end of 2011 game 5 when the Sixers had already surrendered. They say revenge is a dish best served cold.

I'm ready to see Lavoy Allen at the 4 while Brown is in the game. Allen is not very aggressive and probably never will be but he gets in position to pull down boards and he has shown some skill with the short/mid range shot and a nice hook. He can block shots if he gets in gear so if Brown brings a little mean streak, Allen may respond in kind.

Looks like Iguodala is staying and I'm fine with that. If Brown can take some direction, Andre can keep him from throwing himself at any and everyone until it's necessary.

The problem here is not so much that they just signed Kwame Brown, he could provide solid depth. The issue is that they now have Kwame, Moultrie, Thad, Vucavic and Lavoy all not up to starter quality and needing significant minutes. That's five key bench roles given to two positions. Either somebody is going to have to start who shouldn't or they are going to have to make a deal to clear roster space for back court depth.

How many teams has Brown been with? He seems hard to inspire to do what he is being paid for. Age and height?? 2 yrs??? The guy will be either injured or benched unless he really has changed his manners.

Joe 'Nickles' Banner has surreptitiously transitioned moved across the street to perform NBA cap management.

Let me start by saying K BROWN COMPLETELY BLOWS!!!

Then let me tell you this...if were thinking about season tickets cancel that check and that thought....so here is how this ownership and management and DC reward the fans who watched and cheered on this team all last season!!!!!

    WTF.....

Are you going to tell me that we would not have been a better team if we took K Brown ($3M) and Thad Young ($8M) and if you can add equals $11M and packaged that for either Ryan Anderson--Ersan Ilysova--Kris Humphries and we wouldn't have been a better team?????

JOSH HARRIS....dude PLEASE WAKE UP....you are going to loose some of your much needed fan base if this BS continues....the management and DC are killing YOUR INVESTMENT!!!!!!!!

    Kwamee Brown CAN'T PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
