76ers add Tom Sterner as a scout

The 76ers have hired veteran scout and coach Tom Sterner as a fulltime scout.

Coach Doug Collins made the addition on the recommendation of several members of the basketball operations staff. To this point, there has been no official announcement.

For now, Collins has been using Sterner as ''an extra pair of eyes'' during practice.

"We've had him in our meetings and at our practices, and he's been great,'' Collins said. ''Sometimes, when you're coaching, there are things that you don't see because you're so focused on other things. What Tom is doing right now is scouting our team, and the things he brings to me and the assistants will help in our teaching and preparation.''

Sterner has worked in coaching and scouting positions with Orlando, Golden State and Dallas. He got an unofficial start with the Sixers in 1982-83, and has spent the bulk of his NBA time with the Magic. He spent the last two seasons with the Mavericks.

He is a former head coach at Lancaster Catholic High and also served as an assistant at Franklin & Marshall.,
