Agent: Kwame Brown to sign with Sixers; Silas has concussion

POSTED: Friday, July 13, 2012, 1:57 PM
The Sixers have signed center Kwame Brown to a two-year deal worth $6M. (AP Photo)

Kwame Brown's agent said Friday that the center has agreed to sign with the Sixers. Brown, who played for Sixers coach Doug Collins in Washington, would fill the Sixers' big-man void.

The agent, Mark Bartelstein, also told Yahoo Sports that the deal was for two years and $6 million.

Brown, 30, averaged 6.3 points and 6.3 rebounds  in 22.4 minutes last season for Golden State. He has averaged 6.8 points and 5.6 rebounds in his 11-year NBA career.

He was drafted first overall by Washington in 2001. He has played for Washington, the Los Angeles Lakers, Memphis, Detroit, Charlotte and Golden State.

The Sixers announced the re-signing of center Spencer Hawes. The team did not disclose the terms of the contract. Hawes has played 118 games (110 starts) and averaged 8.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.01 blocks in 22.4 minutes. He shot 47.4 percent from the floor.

In other Sixers news, Xavier Silas was injured at the team's final summer league game in Orlando on Friday. The initial reports indicate that the team is concerned that injury could be a skull fracture. Silas has been sent to an Orlando hospital. The Sixers announced that Silas suffered a concussion and possible frontal bone skull fracture.

Also, Yahoo reported that Elton Brand has been picked up off amnesty waivers by the Dallas Mavericks. The Sixers used their amnesty clause on Brand last week.

That Scola point is an interesting thought. He could contribute a great to the Sixers as a starter. But if he gets amnestied he has to clear waivers first. The 76ers may get a shot in waivers because they are currently under the tax and cap (I think), but we may not be high enough up to actually get him.

So when there were bigs that we could have drafted and took a SF there were people saying be patient a move was coming and we actually needed depth at SF. Now after adding more SFs since then and this, am I still supposed to wait for some magical move by this great basketball regime? I just want to know how this works. Zeller, JOnes, Sullinger, Nicholson and White. Keep those names in mind when you put on that Kwame Brown jersey.

Wow, Kwame Brown?!?! I'd have been much happier if they'd have taken a flyer on Greg Oden. Doesn't give this team a thing - not veteran leadership (a la Battie), not toughness (a la EB), not scoring, rebounding, or anything else. From what I remember of him, he's got a terrible work ethic and a worse disposition, turns it over a ton, and can't shoot foul shots. Don't understand this move at all...

K Brown, good move. I trust Collins putting the pieces together.
    He's the best at it.

I am excited to see how Doug is able to bring this group together, but this team is NOT as talented as last years. This signing continues the trend of short duration, low (relative) salary, tall and long. But this team is woefully short of GRIT, TOUGHNESS and PROFESSIONALISM. Doug may be Coach of Year if he gets these guys back to the playoffs! Lots of flexibility with the roster though with only Thad signed beyond 2 years I believe.

JBP:I truly believe as good of a coach as DC is, I also feel he has a touch of "mad scientist" in him, and he is certainly driven by ego..What better boost to his ego than resurrecting Kwame Brown, and making Spencer Hawes,of all people, his vaunted "stretch 4"....If this 2cnd year is REALLY a "player's option", I've got to think there's a collusion thing going on with the agent...Someone should research what free agents Mark Bartlestein has next year.

    WTF is this team doing?

They made it to the EASTERN CONFERENCE SEMIFINALS as a YOUNG, DEFENSIVE, HARD-WORKING team.

Then they sign Nick Young Kwame Brown both CANT PLAY DEFENSE, which is the only reason they were successful in the playoffs.

If they wanted to sign a scorer, then go get a potential YOUNG STAR like Ilysova or Anderson, NOT SPARE PARTS garbage like Young, Brown, Wright, etc

He's not gonna play a whole lot, 15 minutes a game, tops. They have to fill out their roster, folks. It's not like he's going to be a starter. Additionally, he's 6 fouls a game for when they play Dwight Howard. Don't judge the signing until the roster has been filled out.

you people are an embarrassment, no he is not a special player, but he is a CENTER, something we dont have. You all love your sixers but dont see games outside of local. Hawes is a toothpick, end of story. Maybe they will trade him.
Last year you all wantes THAD. I told you he wasnt special. Get a clue

"but he is a CENTER, something we don't have..."

Anyone notice that both teams in this year's finals either didn't have, or didn't play, centers at all? Hawes couldn't even get on the floor when the Celtics - also without a center - went small. That's the way the league is going. You don't NEED a center to just take up space. Big is good, but that means big wings, big guards, a bruiser or two to rebound. You just don't need a center.

I've been faithfully watching this free agent situation and hoping that the Sixers acted wisely. I'm just a fan and not an expert by any means but this K. Brown signing has now allowed me to sign off and concentrate on something else. I've seen him plenty over the past ten years and he just cannot play. I just cannot believe that the Sixers could possibly believe that he is a piece of the rebuilding effort. Methinks that this will be a moot point come the fall as Brown will either be injured or will be in the permanent Collins' dogbox and taking up an expensive spot on the bench.

Just cannot believe that Collins & Co. would want to go down this very bumpy road again. Well, so much for my interest in the offseason. As Ebeneezer Scrooge said, "I'll retire to Bedlam."

I dont know much about the sixers or basketball but i do know that many sports sites are basically making a mokery that any team actually signed this guy. Didnt his last team finish with the worst record in the history of the league???
