Schools CFO to leave Philly

Matthew Stanski, the Philadelphia School District's well-regarded chief financial officer, is leaving the school system, a spokesman confirmed.

Stanski tendered his resignation effective in June, said Fernando Gallard, the spokesman. He is leaving to become supervisor of management, budget and planning for the Montgomery County, Md. school system.

Stanski came to the city from Prince George's County, Md., where he had been CFO there under Superintendent William R. Hite Jr, now Philadelphia's schools chief.

Under his watch, the district weathered incredible financial pressures owing largely to cuts in state aid. It shuttered schools and staff and cut budgets. Throughout, Stanski received high marks from district insiders and others for his stewardship.

But the district is now finally projecting modest growth, with major aid hikes proposed by the city and state.

Stanski was paid $175,000 annually. During his tenure in Philadelphia, his family remained in Maryland.

District officials had warm words for Stanski.

"I appreciate Matthew Stanski's service to the School District of Philadelphia over the last three years amid extremely challenging fiscal conditions," Hite said in a statement. "His financial insight and expertise have played a crucial role as we have worked to stabilize the district."

The district will begin a search for its next CFO in the coming weeks, Hite said.
