Live from the SRC: Charters, protests, and more

Charter school supporters rally outside Philadelphia School District headquarters. A number of charters say the district is overreaching in its demands.

The fate of 10 charter schools will be decided Monday as the SRC holds a special meeting on charter renewals.

And there's no shortage of controversy. The charter community is up in arms over what it considers SRC overreach, and protestors made their displeasure known at a rally prior to the meeting.

House Speaker Mike Turzai (R., Allegheny) earlier Monday sent a letter to the SRC decrying its actions on charters, suggesting the commission is squeezing charters and running afoul of state law.

Thirty-seven members of the public, including the CEOs of many charter organizations, are scheduled to testify at the meeting, scheduled for 3 p.m. Follow along.

(Busy day for news in the district. Unrelated, hundreds of Philadelphia School District teachers protested outside school district headquarters today, demanding a new contract. About 1,000 teachers were absent from school today, many taking personal days as a symbol of their displeasure with the district.)
