Wrong about Chan Ho

POSTED: Thursday, August 13, 2009, 9:39 AM

I would like to apologize to Chan Ho Park.

I wasn’t crazy about this signing last winter. I put him on the list of those guys who pitched well when it really didn’t matter, tried to get too cute and too precise when it did. I saw the up and down career that started with such promise when he was still in his teens, saw last postseason as evidence of him not pitching big when things got big.

Park has been everything I thought he wasn’t this season, beginning with gracefully handling his disappointment being removed as a starter, and pitching well immediately afterwards. After watching J.A. Happ keep the game manageable Tuesday night and Park hand the ball to the back of the bullpen, you couldn’t help but smile about the twists and turns of a 162-game season. It’s part of why paying attention to this sport is so much fun. The more you do, the more there is to see.

Anyway, Park has won me over. I was dead wrong last winter.

I also think Happ’s Tuesday start was an indication that he isn’t just this year’s edition of Kyle Kendrick. He didn’t have much. Yet he kept them in it, even as they were being no-hit. Good stuff.

Shane Victorino on the guy who dumped a beer on him: ``I tip my hat to him. He had perfect timing.''

Hard to not like this guy.

CHP has been awesome, he saved the bullpen big time last nite by throwing three perfect innings. He looks much less yakuza like now that the beard is shaven too.

I agree on both points, especially the fact that Shano can laugh it off is great.

Park has been NEEDED replaced Durbin - who is nothing like last yr... now maybe Myers can do the same for Lidge?

If they move Lidge out of the closer's role, he'll never be any good again for this team. He may never anyway, but as is usually the case, he'll be given too many chances to turn it around because he makes so much money.

I agree on one point B in DC about the fact that if they do move Lidge out of the closer's role he won't be the same. I feel that's what happened in Houston. Would love to see Myers if he pitches well join the pen and have tyler walker stay. Romero just because he hasn't been consitenly healthy should be shut down for the rest of this year. I REALLY like the team's make-up right now. They just need a stronger utility guy who can play both middle infield spots and maybe outfield. The bruntlet situation needs an upgrade.

I would like to officially petition to give Chan Ho Park the nickname "The Evil Dr. Ho." The beard makes him look like a villain from a Bond movie and a man worthy of a nickname. That and the guy has been stellar this year. His mid-90's heater has great late movement and his slider has been reminiscent of Lidge circa '08.

Billy Hall would be an upgrade from Bruntlett and was just released from Milwaukee. He hit 35 homers 2 years ago.

Not another word about rotten Philly fans after what that moron did to Victorino. Unless of course someone here does it to a Cubs outfielder...then we're in trouble again.

Awesome comments... I like the moves the team has made. I still think they should have gotten Halliday too. They would really be set for the next couple of years. Who knows what's going to happen after that

To replace Brun, what about JJHardy from the Brewers, who was just released or Bill Hall, who can play both OF and IF?

I would like to echo and also re-inforce I saw in a posting the other day: Give Chan Ho Park the closer role for September,m and put Lidge on the DL to save his ego. What's the worst that could happen? If he does well,he's your answer for the post-season. If he doesn't, you know that he will be good where he was, and Lidge comes off the Dl rested and ready to resume. Geeze, I should be the GM!(That's "Gonzo Man" to you Ruben!)

I would love Hall but $13M in salary for a utility infielder is a bit steep. Isn't it time to give Miguel Cairo another shot?

KG, Hall is a defensive mess. Something like the baseball version of "oppressed."

TBear, not a horrible idea, but then there is Myers..who we know can close, and Walker with a 2.41 era. Thats is why you're not a GM. You think it's just that easy.

Chan Ho has been a good addition, and unlike another member of the team he has not complained about being put in the pen. He can give you a couple of strong innings behind Pedro, which seems an excellent spot for him. Watching Cliff Lee today, you see what a real big time pitcher can do. He knows exactly what he is doing out there. What a pleasure to watch this guy.
