The Flyers may still be losing this series, but after today’s 6-3 Game 3 victory Marty Biron is outplaying Pittsburgh’s Marc Andre-Fleury. At least statistically.

He’s made more saves, allowed fewer goals and really, was within a late power play goal Friday of stealing Game 2 in Pittsburgh.

So why does he get so little love? Beats me. Unlike so many of the guys who have come between him and Bernie Parent, Biron is technically sound, playoff-tested and a really great teammate. But he’s not that other Marty and his last name isn’t Parent, so until he’s holding that Cup over his head, he better keep standing on it.

A recurring Flyers complaint is that the P on their jersey invites a raised hand by referees. Two great pieces of evidence were successive calls on Mike Richards against Evgeni Malkin in the second period. First Richards was called for a holding call as he hounded Malkin down the left boards.

Replays showed Richards tried but failed to get either hands or stick on him. Later, as Malkin wheeled from Richards in his own zone, he caught an edge and slipped momentarily. Again, Richards was called, this time for a slash.

As bad as the penalties themselves, the descriptions made no sense. Richards was lurching forward on both calls. He didn’t have enough balance left to hold or to slash. Or to foul really.

Later in the period, Jeff Carter was called for a slash that also never occurred. C’mon Zebras. They may not be named Malkin or Sidney Crosby, but these two are not hacks. They should be treated like stars too.

If the Pens get knocked out first round, what will all of the Pittsburghers do with their spare time while it rains all spring?

The NHL wants their named stars to get to the second round...and seeing as how Ovechkin is on the brink of elimination and Crosby is on the brink of advancing, the refs will do what is necessary to make sure one of them makes it.

Yo Sammy, great question of Stevens in the post game presser, too bad you didn't do your homework and therefore goofed, as Stevens never played in an NHL playoff game. Keep up the good work, sparky!

Biron doesn't get love because of goals like #2 today on the short side. Looked like a mental lapse. Biron is a good goalie, and I agree, that compared to the roundabout of goalies the Flyers have had since Hextall, Biron is a nice change. Nonetheless, there are times where you left scratching your head. Particularly in back-to-back games in the regular season. He never looks as sharp in the 2nd game. Thankfully, that doesn't happen in the playoffs and so far I have no real complaints. Goaltending has never been the Flyers' real problem. It has always been the lack of a strong #2 defenseman to compliment a #1 like Timonen or Desjardins.

Dan S, should we overlook horrible officiating when we win? Of course not you moron. We need to keep the refs accountable, win or lose. That they are atrocious most of the time means we must be vigilant and tireless. They were awful tonight and we won despite them.

Hey Sam, until you start naming refs for making bad calls there will continue to be no accountability for NHL officiating and therefore no change. Oh, but bad refs are the reason that people say the fighting needs to be there. So, if you like fights in hockey then you are likely fine with bad calls too.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the only other playoff game since at least 1933 decided by a two-man advantage overtime goal came in 2003, when Tampa Bay beat Washington 4-3 on Vincent Lecavalier's goal 2:21 into the extra session. The officiating bias in this series in favor of the Pens has been an embarrassment to the NHL, and it continued today. Call that whining if you want, but it's been as blatant as anything I've seen in more than 30 years as a Flyers fan.

I thought Pierre McGuire was going to give Crosby a happy ending right there on national TV.

How did Crosby not get called on a cross check right infront of Biron on Carle when Knuble did in OT. And don't forget the slash that broke Kimmo's stick before that scrum infront of Biron. No call on that slash either. Those are the two penalties the Flyers lost game 2 on. NHL needs to discipline the refs. Until that happens, I give the league itself no respect.

Good game. Flyers need that type of intensity every game, and production from their name players. Got that tonight. Series now hinges on Tuesday night. Expect Pens to come out hitting and flying right from the start. Flyers gotta be ready for that, weather the initial onslaught and do what they did tonight. I'm more a soccer guy, but, I don't see that much from Pittsburgh's defenders. Goncar's probably the best of the lot. But he's a bit long in the tooth. Gill is big, but nothing terribly terrific. What Pittsburgh has is arguably the best player in the game today, Malkin, but the Russians are notoriously temperamental, and a couple of hits on him could take him out of his groove. I think, while Crosby is definitely a deft passer with excellent vision, he's a bit overblown, as the NHL tries its darnedest to market a 'native son.'
