Police Shoot Stabbing Suspect

A police officer shot and wounded a man who was stabbing a father and son on a South Philadelphia street Thursday night.

"It's good the officers arrived when they did," said police spokesman Lt. John Stanford. "They probably saved two lives."

The violent episode developed around 10 pm when 3rd District patrol officers responded to a fight in the street at 10th and Mifflin Streets. There, they found a 23-year-old Asian man stabbing at a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son.

"The officers repeatedly ordered him to stop and drop the knife," Stanford said.

When the man kept stabbing, one of the officers fired three times, striking the suspect in his hip and back, Stanford said.

The victims have been treated at Jefferson Hospital and released, Stanford said.

The suspect is in stable condition.

Police did not say what the men were fighting about.

As is in every police shooting, the officers will be placed on administrative duty as Internal Affairs and the District Attorney's Office investigates.
