Louisville junior third baseman Tyler Young, a 2010 graduate of Malvern Prep, was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the seventh round (No. 218 overall) of Major League Baseball's first-year player draft.
Through 61 games this season, the 5-foot-10, 178-pounder was batting .349 (76 for 218) with 57 RBIs and 54 runs. He had 13 doubles, seven triples, four home runs, and a .528 slugging percentage.
In his senior season at Malvern Prep, Young, a slick-fielding shortstop, batted .508 with 46 runs, 38 RBIs, 20 stolen bases, 13 triples, nine homers, and seven doubles. He was an Inquirer first-team all-Southeastern Pennsylvania selection.

North Penn's Cinderella run is still alive.
Moving to within two victories of their second state crown in five seasons, the upstart Knights, making the most of nine hits, thumped District 1 champ Coatesville, 11-1, in six innings Thursday in a PIAA Class AAAA baseball quarterfinal at Spring-Ford.

Citing "multiple reasons," Mike Zolk has stepped down as Neumann-Goretti's head baseball coach after two seasons.
Moving forward, Zolk said he would concentrate on his job as head hitting instructor at Sluggerville, a year-round baseball and softball training facility in Northeast Philly.

An extra batting session after Monday's practice went a long way Tuesday for Pennridge's Mike Kacergis.
Breaking out of his playoff slump, Kacergis went 3 for 3 from the cleanup spot as the Rams, banging out 19 hits, rolled past defending state champion La Salle, 11-4, in a PIAA Class AAAA first-round matchup at Ashburn Field in South Philly.
