A touchdown pass with no time remaining gave Abington a dramatic 35-34 victory over visiting Northeast in the nonleague opener for both squads Friday at Schwarzman Stadium.

David Kretschman’s 5-yard touchdown pass to wideout Jordan Neely, followed by Matt Bevilacqua’a point-after kick, was the difference. The tally capped a 12-play, 72-yard drive that started with 2 minutes, 50 seconds to play.

“That was an ugly, ugly, miserable game for us,” Ghosts coach Tim Sorber said, whose squad trailed by 28-14 late in the third quarter. “But we’re happy that we’re 1-0 instead of 0-1.”

For Abington, ranked No. 16 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, senior tailback Juawine Sowell carried 44 times for 238 yards and three scores.

Northeast QB Asa Manley rushed 18 times for 187 yards. He hit wideout Clayton Rush, a transfer from Father Judge, for scores of 11 and 16 yards.

Manley scored on bursts of 78 and 59 yards. The second gave the Vikings a 34-28 advantage with 8:48 to go.
