Football: McKay introduced as Judge coach

While cradling a football that commemorates the program's 1975 city-title squad, Mike McKay was introduced as Father Judge's new coach Monday afternoon in a press conference at the school.

McKay, 54, was the starting quarterback when the Crusaders beat Frankford, 9-6, at Veterans Stadium for the crown.

"It's a dream come true," the 1976 Judge graduate said. "Not many people get a chance to be part of a championship team and then come back and coach at that school. It's a special day for me."

It's the first head-coaching job at the high school level for McKay, who has served as an assistant at Archbishop Carroll, Northeast, Upper Merion, Archbishop Wood, and the old Cardinal Dougherty.

"There's going to be more responsibility being in charge," he said. "I'm a hands-on type of coach. I'll be involved in all facets of the operation. Also, I'm going to rely on my assistants to help meet the challenges ahead."

McKay was the offensive coordinator at each of his previous stops, including last year at Carroll. He has gained a reputation for his know-how in running a spread attack.

"I go to a lot of clinics, talk to a lot of college coaches, watch a lot of film," he said. "I've always prided myself in being one step ahead."

McKay replaces Tommy Coyle, who stepped down after 13 seasons with the Crusaders to take the top spot at Penn Charter.

McKay, who also played baseball at Judge, works as a terminal trucking manager in Langhorne.

He becomes only the sixth head coach in the team's 59-year history and just the third in the last 39 years.

McKay's high school coach, John "Whitey" Sullivan guided the Crusaders from 1974 to 1999.
