Howard Eskin to stay with Fox 29, has no plans to replace Josh Innes on WIP

Howard Eskin on the Fox 29 set. Despite not renewing his contract, Eskin plans on sticking with the station for the upcoming Eagles season.

Despite announcing he was leaving Fox 29, it appears Howard Eskin isn’t quite ready to give up the spotlight.

The longtime Philadelphia sportscaster has agreed to continue his role as the host of the station’s Eagles pre-game show, Game Day Live.

"We are thrilled that Howard will be staying on to anchor our very popular Eagles pre-game show,” said Jim Driscoll, vice president and news director of Fox 29. “Howard's coverage of the Eagles is second to none in this town."

Eskin, who had previously covered sports nightly for Fox 29, will be joined before every Eagles game this season by Fox 29 sports anchor Shawn Bell, ex-Eagles linebacker Gary Cobb, and's Dave Spadaro.

“My plan all along was to shorten down my work days,” Eskin said. “It’s a show I wanted to do, and I’m at the stadium on gamedays anyway, so I’m happy to do it.

Eskin plans to use some of the time he’s freed up doing more radio work for SportsRadio 94.1 WIP, which is keeping him busy with fill-in spots. On Friday, he will guest host WIP’s morning show in place of Angelo Cataldi. Next week, he will fill-in on Tuesday and Thursday during the afternoon drive slot vacated by the firing of Josh Innes.

So, is Eskin interested in returning to afternoon drive-time radio on WIP, which he left back in 2011?

“That’s not my plan. Whatever the program director, who happens to be my son, wants, I’m on board with that,” Eskin said, noting that he doesn't see himself returning to afternoons regularly.

"It's honestly something I haven't really thought about," Eskin said. “So I’m going to play the role of Chip Kelly. Right now, I’m not going to answer a hypothetical.”

At this point, sources at WIP say the station is keeping all its options open before hiring a new afternoon host, and is not close to making a decision.
